First Impressions: SankareaOK, I have seemed to have picked all the weird romantic comedies for the season. Not that I really mind, I enjoy the crazy, but I kind of picked blindly on this season. Yet I was able to pick two slightly messed up shows. Zombie love, really? If this concept wasn't hit with two darts on a dartboard of concepts to create, I'm going to call BS on it.
So let me get this right. Our protagonist is in love with zombies, like "love" love them. As in wanting a relationship with one. This is already not starting off OK with me. Moving right along, he also lives at a Shinto shrine with his grandmother, sister, and father. Grandma already looks half-dead anyways maybe that's where he gets it from. *shudder* Anyway, one day the families pet cat Babu gets hit by the neighbors truck and dies. Chihiro, now depressed, decides to try and resurrect Babu using techniques he found in a old book he has. It has in detail how to bring things back from the dead. Figuring that he can't do much more harm, he decides to try to bring the cat back from the dead. He likes zombies anyways so there is not problem for him to have a zombie cat. While hidden away in an abandoned building with a bowling alley of all things, he spots a girl outside walking around by herself. She leans over a well and starts to scream her head off. Apparently she has a lot of pent up problems to get out, which she starts saying out loud. Well, Chihiro hears all of it and then drops his juice like an idiot. This alerts the girl that someone is around and realizes that someone now knows her secrets. The two are now linked by each others secrets and now have to be friends. Typical.
I am not digging on the character style at all. It's not horrid, but it's not winning any awards either. I mean, Chihiro with his cat ear hair is just plain awful. Rea's look is pretty standard with nothing really standing out. The only one I am kind of digging is the cousin Ranko. Again, you are not winning me over. The voices too are pretty standard. Everyone sounds about like I would think they would sound for their character. Chihiro's voice actually gets annoying towards the end of the episode, when he starts messing with Rea. It was hard to listen to without wanting to just skip it or turn it off. The ending theme is wonderful though. It's a nice soothing ballad, befitting the series. I at least relaxed a bit after I heard it.
As of right now I want to drop the show. There is not much here that makes me want to continue watching it, but I will at least give it three episodes to convince me that it's good. The characters are not winning me over, nor do I even care what happens to them at this point. The theme is just ridiculous and not pleasing at all. I came into this series with and open an mind, thinking maybe there might be something special about this. Maybe it will win me over with it's charm or wit or heart. So far, I was wrong.
