After getting deep into a criminal lifestyle mood (listening to 36 Chambers, Cuban Linx and watching the Godfather) last night, I've realized I don't have any real crime family anime in my collection. Sure, there's Black Lagoon if I want to get my thugs and scoundrels fix, but that's not really what I'm after.
Japanator Tentacle Hivemind, what would you suggest?

Four replies and no one mentioned Baccano! (http://myanimelist.net/anime/2251/Baccano!) yet? It's the closest thing you're going to find, and a great show on top of that.

While Baccano is the best choice in my eyes, I think Gungrave fits the description as well.
I haven't seen this anime, but supposedly Akagi (http://myanimelist.net/anime/658/Akagi) is a very good yakuza anime as well. It's from the director of Kaiji (http://myanimelist.net/anime/3002/Kaiji) and shares the same artistic style. It's worth looking into.

You should watch Akagi for the mahjong, not for the yakuza. It doesn't go into much detail and the "crime organizations" featured in it are not what you'd call realistic. It's much the same thing as Kaiji, really.

Maybe Gunslinger Girl or Noir. If you don't mind it being Sci-Fi than Ghost in the Shell: SAC should fit the bill.
