So I was listening to Japanator AM 03 and Ben Huber mentioned how no one cares about this show. Naturally, I need to see this changed, so let's discuss Durarara!! with all the other awesome people who are already watching it! As for those who are still not sure why this is a show they're supposed to be watching, I'll try my best and sell you on it.

Reasons to watch Durararara!!
Disclaimer: I'm sorry about all the exclamation marks.

It's Baccano! 2.0
You know Baccano, the story about immortal alchemists in Godfather-era America: anime edition? Yes, well, what most everyone who saw it will likely agree on is that it was one of the high points in anime of recent years, so if you haven't seen it, go do it now and then continue to watch Durarara!!.

For those who have seen Baccano! and didn't like it because it was a tad convoluted: that is not the case with Durarara!!. Most importantly, the chronology makes sense this time around, which I'm sure will reassure a lot of people who were left utterly confused by Baccano! (myself says hi). The cast is still huge though...

Durarara!! in ye olde days.

It's a change of pace
This show has no moe, fanservice or power levels and therefore stands out in the winter 2010 anime season like CG in a Gonzo show. Or maybe I'm just seeing what I want to see. Episode four has a showering scene, and though everyone knows showering scenes are never necessary, showering is what people do and in Durarara, it's primarily used to portray a certain character as being essentially human, so it's awwright. As for moe, I admit I'm not an expert on the topic but Durarara is not it.

In fact, what I noticed about this show is that it's actually safe to show this to your non-otaku friends and they won't think any less of you. That must be a bonus to some!

http://keikakudoori.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/seikon_no_qwaser-11.jpg
Don't tell me you have anything better to watch.

GARtender
Ben mentioned a certain character I don't think is driving this show at all, but who will surely help in selling the show to fans of the "be awesome first, think later" archetype - think Kamina. That or the fangirls crowd, but again, I'm no expert.

Shizuo Heiwajima is obviously a badass, apparently doubles as a bartender, and throws vending machines around like it ain't no thang. Apart from that I don't know who he is or what his motivations are, but it's a fact that whenever he enters a scene, gears start to turn and shit starts to happen. Here's a picture for reference:

From left to right: Before, After.

It's every anime you've seen before, like you've never seen it before
Something I was worried about when Durarara was announced was that everything that was even remotely original about Baccano! was lost in moving the setting from 1930's mafia neighbourhoods to modern-day Ikebukuro, Tokyo.

Truth is, yes, (some of the) the main characters now attend a school and the first episode does focus on the ever-popular "urban legend" motif. Come episode 02 though, you're instantly reminded of what made Baccano! Baccano!, once supernatural and otherwise insane characters step into the spotlight. It's Anime: The Anime, but without all the nonsense the more snobbish among us have come to hate, and with a twist.

http://sainoba.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/178roy.jpg
Sorta like this, but different.

Final Reason: It's called Durarararara!!!
Come on, that has to make you wonder what it's about, right?

I'd like to thank you for this from the bottom of my heart.

Celty is mai waify, etc etc.

Also, it was sorta cheesy, but also sorta sweet, Celty's line in episode 2: "The world isn't as cruel as you think it to be." I DAWWW'd then got cynical again and thought "Eh, maybe it is." I don't know what to think, but I haven't paused like that while watching anime for a while. SO THAT'S COOL I GUESS.

Ben is obv. moe for Celty

I'd laugh really hard if it turned out she had a moe face. Build up all this legitimate character and such and then just throw Yui's head on top of it and have it that her memories return and she remembers she's from K-On and everything goes to hell.

I agree, a show as good as Durarara does not deserve the same fate as Baccano. I personally didn't like Baccano that much, but Durarara is definitely this season's best anime. Perfect combination of Baccano's supernatural intrigue with a stylish modern day aesthetic. Oh, and it makes sense! How awesome is that? For some reason, despite having almost just as many characters as Baccano, Durarara's more unique character designs have made it a lot easier for me to remember who's who.

So in other words, I echo PBz0r's sentiment. If you're only going to watch one anime this season, make it Durarara.

Being an hopeless optimist, I really loved that scene.

Also, being the descendant of Irishmen, I found the use of Celtic mythology really interesting. Still, can't help but pick Simon as my favorite character so far, he just really has a lot of potential as a character and I like what I've seen already.

So far I like Baccano alot more, but Durarara is still awesome.

I'm mostly looking forward to these things:

Headless romance
The latest episode was very interesting. If Celty is indeed a derrivative of the railtracer, she'll undoubtedly go through alot of character development, resulting in a romantic relationship with the doctor guy. Headless romance = awesome (and slightly creepy)

An exciting game of Mikado
Mikado's name may sound retarded, but obviously they picked it for a reason. For those of you who never played the game of Mikado: It's a game where everything starts fairly simple, but one wrong move can send every element of the game into chaos, crashing into eachother (kind of like Jenga)
That chaos is bound to be unleashed sooner or later, where every character's path is going to intersect violently.

Just for some contrast, I like Dulalala a lot more than Baccano. I think what was fun about Baccano was the zany feeling and a lot of the over-the-top characters. The setting was novel but I didn't really care about the [minor spoilers]secret society of I'M ON A BOATers[/spoilers]. The setting was novel, again, but I didn't think they got the Roaring 20s quite right by my book.

On the other hand, they totally got Ikebukuro down like, you had to be there. Of course, duh. And building on that, they were able to port over all that fun stuff that I love about Baccano. So it was just better.

So guys, how about that last episode?

You guys probably saw my summary, so you already know what I think, but I figured I'd try to rescue this topic anyway. Next ep looks boss as well. I wish we had seen more of the torture scene though -- in the original he picks a volume of Missing and they almost stab his eyes out with mirror shards.

Ben, have you read all of the novels? I'm thinking of taking the plunge.

I just re-watched 1-6 to get with Wilson to get him up to speed, and I just noticed something: your waifu and my husbando hang out an awful lot. I didn't notice all the times they were together (aside from episode 4) until I watched them all in succession.

I do NOT like the intense way he looks at the void where her head should be *insert jealous growling.*

Indeed.

For those who have seen Baccano! and didn't like it because it was a tad convoluted: that is not the case with Durarara!!. Most importantly, the chronology makes sense this time around, which I'm sure will reassure a lot of people who were left utterly confused by Baccano!.

I want to say I regret typing this. Durarara is definitely playing with chronology as much as Baccano, it's just done much better. The story in Durarara overall is nicely moving from A to B, it's just taking a lot of -highly enjoyable- detours. Episode 02 and 05 seem to be making the most clever use of chronology, which makes those two my most favourite episodes so far. I enjoyed 06 a whole lot too though. It displays another of Baccano's and Durarara's strengths: diversity in characters.

So in other words, I'm at a point where I might be enjoying Durarara more than Baccano, and where I can safely say it's the best show this season.

As for this theory, it seems like a safe bet. The only thing I wonder about is if this also goes for Mikado himself. Judging from my experience with Baccano! though, I don't think characters are going to evolve that much.

Ben, have you read all of the novels? I'm thinking of taking the plunge.

Nope, I can't read much moonspeak, but I've done plenty of research and read as many translations as I can find, so I have a good idea of where the story is headed. If the Baccano! and Durarara!! books never come out here officially I will be a sad panda.

So in other words, I'm at a point where I might be enjoying Durarara more than Baccano, and where I can safely say it's the best show this season.

Oh yeah, I'm really happy that it's going to be longer than Baccano!, and also getting more exposure as well.

I can't get enough of this show. So much to love. Strangely, I got more into this than I did Baccano, perhaps because the progression of the story is more linear?

Two things I noticed from ep. 6:
1. Anyone catch the password to the Dollars website? I lol'd.

2. Could they make it any more clear where Celty's head is?

As I said before, absolutely loving the show. Episode 6 managed to do everything I liked about Baccano while taking care of all the things I didn't like: Strength in the wide cast of characters and understandable usage of mixing up the chronology. Definitely my favorite show of the season.

I cannot wait for next week's episode, when GARtender (hopefully) shows up again to kick more ass.

Spoilers for Episode 6 below.

Seeing as how this is the Durarara!! thread I think I'll post my crazy theory here.

We all know Celty is some time of headless folklore figure who has, well, lost her head. Now in a lot of the episodes we've seen Anri's friend's "boyfriend" traveling around with a girl who people seem to think is Anri's friend from the back. However whenever they see her face they always quickly apologize and say they had the wrong person.

My personal theory is that when Anri's friend went missing she somehow lost her head and by this time the boy she was stalking came to care for her. In episode 6 we learned that the dude's sister is the doctor at the place kidnapping people. I theorize they were keeping Anri alive somehow when they found Celty's head. They graphed it onto Anri's friends body (the reason no one recognizes her from the front and the wicked scars she has across her neck).

As for why they're kidnapping people I've no clue.

Sorry about not being able to name name's I'm horrible with them and honestly too lazy to go and check. Anyway that's my crazy theory regarding where Celty's head is.

KarenGellender

I theorized that Celty's head might have something to do with the girl with the wicked scars across her neck, but I didn't think it through that far. Sounds pretty plausible to me- well, plausible in the Duarara! sort of way:).

So guys, how about that last episode?

Probably my favorite so far, because scalpers in Japan are a breed to themselves. it's a bit of a "you had to see one" kind of thing for me.

Also kazutano (or however they romanized his name) is drawn like some out-of-place European animation-character.

Okay, someone should give Setre some sort of award or something for being right about Celty's head.

I'm kind of amazed at how real and feminine they make Celty seem, despite the complete lack of facial expressions. Totally not a character I thought I'd care about, but they've managed to make her so much more than just a cool gimmick.

Just watched episode 8. Wow, it's crazy how they can get Celty to express so many feelings and thoughts despite the lack of a face (and a head in general). She's definitely the cutest headless character I've ever seen, if that counts for anything.

Now I'm just curious about when the plot is going to pick up in pace. It seems like right now, Durarara is going through an introductory period, just trying to get its viewers acquainted with every since character. I have no complaints since I love all the characters, but I'm looking forward to seeing things fall into place and the plot moving forward.

Yeah, Brains Base really outdid themselves. When you lack facial expressions, everything else has to "make up" for it, and from her body language to the voiceover for her texting, it ends up exceeding any "requirements" you might create.

Just finished 8. Confirmed my suspicion with that ending. All around awesome.
- I fear for the Mikado/Kida/Sonohara group. I just feel like all 3 of them are going to end up hurt/sad/injured when all is said and done. It's amazing how this show has made me care for these three, and I just want to see them all happy more than anything.
- As for Celty/Shinra/Shizuo, I dont guess it's really much of a triangle there. If Shizuo does fall for Selty, it won't be returned the other way. I think Celty has feelings for Shinra, but not sure it goes as far as his feelings for her. With his line of work, I'm guessing Shinra ends up dead, and Celty rides off into the sunset alone. Although them being together in the end would make me much happier.

And I forgot to mention during the last episode, that a grade-school Sinra/Shizuo prequel series would be MOST welcome.

I'm guessing that's Anri's friend's head, since they presumably cut it off when they grated Celty's on there. Ewwwww.

Speaking of Celty, I love the fact that she seems to be the only one who understands Shizuo, but she doesn't understand Shinra AT ALL- it's like with Shizuo, she has her wise-Dullahan perspective, but with Shinra it's too emotional for her to be logical.

Thoughts on episode 9:
- Seiji's is a pretty disturbed family.
- The way Izaya speaks of "humans" and how much he loves them kinda makes me feel like he doesn't think of himself as one (or that's what I'm getting from the subtitles). I mean, we've already seen a Dullahan, so I wouldn't be surprised if Izaya reveals himself to be some other mythical creature at some point. Even among the cast of Durarara, the guy just isn't normal.
- Shizuo is love.

But is it just me or did episode 12 sort of come off as a "conclusion" episode? I mean, if it weren't for the last 5 minutes between Izaya and Namie, I would've assumed the show had ended. But hey, I'm not complaining if we get another 12 episodes of headless waifu, Gartender, and motherfucking Emperor of the Dragon's Peak (Mikado).

I was a tiny bit disappointed in 12 after the sheer awesomeness of the previous episode, but I'm still psyched for the rest of the series.

Also, I hope that Mikado and Shizuo team up to kill that asshole Izaya; that is all.

If Izaya dies that would suck a lot of the fun out of this show.

Episode 12 was... good, I think? Judging from Izaya's rant, it seems like the introductory arc is finally over. Valhalla? Valkyries? Ikebukuro battle royale? Bring it on.

If episode 12 was just a taste of the violence to come (Seiji slamming Mika's head until she "dies") then bring it on. I do want to see Shizuo take somebody's head off with a vending machine :D

Love the new OP theme. Really interested what they're going to do for the Slasher arc.

Finally someone agrees with me and thinks Izaya is an asshole! Almost everyone else I know calls him a Draco in Leather Pants (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DracoInLeatherPants).

Uh, trust me when I say this: if you think Izaya is an asshole now, just wait until later.

but at least he kind of gets what he deserves in novel 6.

besides that i am still curious how they want to manage to put all the stuff in the next 11 episodes.
i mean 40% of the cast still haven't showed up at all in the series so far.

btw:why you guys don't have a spoiler tag in this forum? it makes it hard to discuss with people who already know something from the novel.

Well, I don't think we're going to see most of those characters. Since we haven't even had the slightest inkling about many of the other characters, my guess would be that Brains Base will just tiptoe around them and leave it open for the possibility of another season. DRR!! has been selling pretty well, so it may end up being continued.

Or they'll take the money and fund a second Baccano! season. (I wish.)

Speculation time!

After the end of episode 13 I think the Slasher is going to end up being Anri. Maybe a split personality as she doesn't seem to be all there anyway.

As for the Izaya discussion I like him. Sure he seems evil but he just oozes style as well. It also helps that he reminds me of Rail Tracer the more I think about it. If Izaya and Shizuo were to meld into one person they would become Rail Tracer.

Funny you should mention that, because Rail Tracer/Clare was my least favorite character in Baccano, which is probably why I dislike Izaya so much. In fact, I'd almost go as far as claim that his constant presence was sort of why I ended up not liking Baccano as much as I could have.

Doesn't help he beat my favorite character, Ladd Russo in a fight.

Just watched episode 14. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought that this scene was absolutely adorable.

I think we can all agree that shadow hearts are the most adorable thing ever.
I love how normal it makes them look to act like that.

I actually did the "awwww kawai" and then laughed when Celty did that.
