my computer ain't too hot, but i can play 1080p mkv files using CoreAVC rather fine. the problem? subtitles don't work in WMP. does anyone have similar problems? or solutions? SMplayer isn't as CPU efficient as CoreAVC unfortunately.

I always use MPC (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/) along with CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/) (which uses FFmpeg). FFmpeg is not especially efficient, but I've never encountered any problems.

As far as I know, CoreAVC is one of the fastest codecs on the market. MPC is one of the fastest mediaplayers on the market, so you should give it a shot.
MPC normally detects the audio and subtitle channels automatically. If you prefer to have better subtitle support and more fancy options in general, try VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). VLC asks a bit more from your computer, is a bit more buggy, but overall offers a much bigger package.

sounds good. i haven't downloaded both yet, but is there anything in particular you do to make sure they are working together harmoniously?

wow that worked perfectly with exception to the fact that the subtitles are somewhat off with CCCP. i can live with that.

If your computer a little outdated I'd try to stick with CoreAVC and MPC...
I have a pretty decent PC so I've never ran into any problems of this sort.

it's odd though. i don't understand why CCCP is making the audi and video out of sync. oh well

I have no idea what you can do about it, but I can tell you I've only had this problem with 1080p mkv's on an early Pentium III. I actually switched from VLC to MPC back then because my PC couldn't handle VLC half the time. So unless your PC (laptop?) is even older the problem probably lies elsewhere.

Something that beats VLC and works beautifully pretty much any codec would be KMPlayer.

KMPlayer (http://filehippo.com/download_kmplayer/)

I've found that CCCP works better with anime MKVs, since it can process subtitles better than VLC (fonts, colors, etc).
However, I prefer VLC for all AVIs and non-anime MKVs I have.

And I've never really noticed any lag/out of sync stuff in CCCP. You sure you've uninstalled previous codec/players prior to running CCCP. I've read that can cause conflicts.

Also, what are your system specs?
