Well, it's possible I couldnt wait, and it's POSSIBLE I checked out episode one. Not saying I did, but I WILL say I'll still check out Funi's version on Thursday.
SPOILERS Below
Not really sure what's going on.
First episode was somewhat of a standalone, starting in the middle of the series. I don't remember an 'Ice Alchemist' story from the manga, but I could just have forgotten. In any case, it served as a good point to reintroduce the key players, I suspect. The boys, Mustang, Bradley, Armstrong, Hughes, and even Kimblee.
So I can see this going two ways: A completely new story with random adventures, somewhat like Negima?! was to the original, or this was just a standalone reintroduction, to move it quickly to the point where the story split last time.
I believe the split last time was after the death of Hughes. This episode, even in just a few Hughes scenes made the guy incredibly likable, so I think his death would still have meaning if it were to happen right away.
Quality wise, you can see the difference already in the 720 presentation. Show was nicely animated, and nicely colored. One scene in particular when the 'Ice Alchemist' went into a dark alley and came face to face with Bradley. The change in light was shown by changing everything into Black & White, aside from the blood dripping from the guy's arm, and the 'power' of the Philosopher's stone he was using. It was pretty cool.
Oh, and it looks like next week will flash back to the 'incident' where the boys lost what they lost to start this journey.
END SPOILERS
In any case, no matter what they decide to do, I look forward to more. The humor and action from the first series all return, and it feels pretty good. And I cant wait to watch it Thursday from Funi! :D
