The name is, of course, Pangloss. The prior sentence is probably not necessary, because if you were unable to read the byline, the clarification could not have clarified anything, but I stand by it. At any rate, I am an old veteran of the Destructoids, and long time reader of Japanator. I figure I might as well introduce myself more formally on the forums.

I'm not sure I should be here, because apparently I'm not supposed to be a nerd. At the anime club last week (that should be a qualifier right there) one of the members had brought a guest. In explaining the whole 'otaku' thing, she gestured at members around the room with "he's an otaku, she's an otaku, otaku, otaku..." and when she got to me, said "not sure if he's an otaku". For reference, I have attended this club regularly since the start of the fall semester, and at the time I was reading SZS volume 1. Am I supposed to be flattered, or should I stick with 'confused'?

Anecdote being done, I should mention that I'm a student at the University of Memphis, learning moonspeak, and I count among my favorite shows Gurren Lagann, FLCL, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. So, hi. I understand there's an IRC? Server/channel?

Nice to meet you Gurren Lagan IRC etc.

The word otaku is thrown around a lot these days. Judging by your taste in animu, I think you'll fit in just fine.

Quite. (http://www.japanator.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5)

Isn't otaku a label that makes the wearer proud nowadays? I guess it depends on who you talk to.

I was just sort of amused at the notion that anyone could point at someone holding a volume of SZS in their hand and somehow not consider them a complete fucking nerd.

But Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei is social commentary, which is perfectly acceptable.

Among nerds.

Would it have helped if I was reading Genshiken instead?

The girl in question probably doesn't know what Zad-zoo-bow and Gen-shee-can are about in the first place, but no, I don't see that helping at all.

You might want to try reading a book next time. In Latin. And smoke a pipe. These are things not commonly associated with otaku.
