No it's no a threat to get you to read this thread :p
It's a thread aboot one of the coolest OVA I have seen... Read or Die or R.O.D.
I have watched it twice before and am currently watching it for the third time...
I curious if anyone else has watched or even heard of this series...
It caught my eyes a few years back when it was on TV and I was like, "hell's yeah, I'm all over that!!"
It's a lil' hard to explain but it's aboot this agency, Britsh Legacy, that are sent out to recover a priceless book and one of their agents, Yomiko Readman (The Paper) and her extreme love of said book...
She will put herself in harms way just to read it...It's actually hilarious...
The action is rather over the top but still righteous and the animation is beautiful!!
A few twists and turns later and we have come to find our selves watching the credits roll on one of the best OVA's I have ever seen...
I urge you to check out if you haven't and watch it again if you have!!

ROD is one of my favorite animes ever. I first watched it when it was shown on adult swim all those years ago (about 4 years ago I think). It was one of the first titles I ever purchased, I Love it a lot. I also like ROD the TV, although its not as good as the OVA, it still has its high points.

ooh I should have made this thread
I'm a massive Read Or Die fan, as a matter fact it's my favorite anime franchise of all time
I so wish they would bring the novels here

I'm watching the dub of the TV series. It's looking to be one of the best dubs I've ever seen, which I'd like to point out is really saying something. I especially like how the language class bit from episode 4 was handled.
So basically, I watched it expecting international political conspiracies and got Avatar: The Last Airbender except with paper. I'm not complaining, though.

ROD OVAs are amazing and still one of my favorites. The TV series just ended with a huge fizzle.

R.O.D The TV has what may be my favorite dub of all time
part of what makes it so great is that it uses so many actors who either only rarely worked in anime or had never worked in anime at all (in the case of Sara Lahti as Maggie, she hasn't done any anime since and probably never will)
Read or Die as a whole is criminally underrated, it seemed like it was popular back when it was new, but now it seems all but forgotten, this makes me mad

Seriously. The TV series was the show that got me into Aniplex's work. It also had one of the best deluxe edition boxes I'd ever seen. That so many people overlook it now just seems silly.

That's one of the things I like most about it. I haven't heard any of the voices in it before or after. It's like it's time-locked in a better era that absolutely no one remembers anymore.
Is it odd that almost all of my favorite dubs have none of my favorite voices?

I loved the OVA and the TV Series. I have a wall scroll of the Paper Sisters on my wall, above my laptop as I'm typing this. So yeah I'm kinda a big fan. The TV Series was great except I didn't like how Yomiko wasn't as awesome as she used to be, at least intially. Also I maybe wrong but didn't her VA change for the TV Series? Though I do like how Joker was the mastermind, and that threw me for a loop.
I have volume one of the manga. It's a side story starring Yomiko, before the events of the TV Series. It was alright.

I have a wall scroll too! it's of the Paper Sisters and Nenene, is it the same one you have?
oh and you might want to mark your spoilers ;)
anyway I read all the manga and while it's not as good as the anime (the manga is actually a separate continuity from both the novels and the anime) it was still more R.O.D and it made me very happy
at this point in time I would probably give my left nut for either a translation of the novels or more anime (or both!)
I'm hoping though that maybe when they finish the Hellsing OVAs they'll make OVAs based on the Read or Die novels, how awesome would that be? (Hideyuki Kurata has been writing the scripts for the Hellsing OVAs and has said he would like to do more R.O.D anime one day)

I'm watching the OVA dubbed. I don't like Yomiko's voice. Something feels very off about it. The rest of it seems okay, although years of Team Fortress 2 have ruined my ability to discern accurate yet exaggerated accents from stereotypical caricatures of accents.

@ The-Excel Sorry about the spoiler.
@ The Amazing Shenazin Actually my wall scroll just has the Paper Sisters. Do you have a pic?
Also I have a doujinshi PC game featuring the Paper Sisters and Yomiko. It's a side scroller where you can choose to play as the Paper or the sisters, of which you can only use one of the sisters at a time. It's kinda cool. One of the enemy types is the robot from Cromatrie High School lol.

anyway on a side note, has anyone ever listened to the commentaries on the dvds? they're excellent and make you wish you were friends with the voice actors, one thing that's funny is the director for the dub is a guy named Taliesin Jaffe who sounds normal in the commentaries but when you see pics of him he has weird purple hair and stuff (sort of like Greg Ayres now that I think about it)
I haven't actually watched R.O.D The TV since 2005, it's been on my re-watch list for years now

there used to be this shop (it's gone now sadly) at a mall not too far from where I live that sold all sorts of imported Japanese stuff, dvds, CDs, figurines, tv shirts etc, it was pretty damn awesome, but it was also pretty small and half of the store was devoted to hello kitty stuff
some of the stuff might have been bootlegs (some of the T-shirts were, but there were allot of official shirts as well) and they had a bunch of wallscrolls, I don't know if the one I bought was bootleg or not, but I doubt it simply because it's so high quality (there are no logos anywhere on it though), perhaps someone who's more of an expert on these sort of things would know more than I do
anyway it's been hanging on my bedroom wall since 2005, a constant reminder of Read Or Die :)
boy, the more I think about R.O.D the more depressed I get that all these years later there's been no more anime or any English translations of the novels :(

I'd say The Jungle by Upton Sinclair is a great book.
It is incredibly depressing, but for men of immigrant ancestry like myself we must understand what our forefathers had to endure under the cruelty of an unchecked capitalist machine and try to prevent any kind of treatment like that to exist. If you couldn't tell, the book kinda turn me into a socialist, so dependin' on what your current ideologies are Idno if you'll enjoy it.
