And it turns out Casshern was formerly a 1970s Tatsunoko series, Neo-Human Casshern, that version of which will be appearing as a character in the upcoming Wii fighter Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. The show also got a mid-'90s OVA release, a live-action adaptation, and now this crispy reboot, the sexy OP of which you can see above.
The story has once again been altered to suit our 21st-century GRIMDARK tastes: Casshern is an android assassin sent by robot overlord Braiking Boss to kill Luna, a mysterious girl summoned by the humans. Casshern does his job, but accidentally sets off the apocalypse. Centuries later, he turns up as an amnesiac, where it seems that whole ending-the-world thing isn't really good for one's street cred. He also befriends a loli. There is no word yet on if Friender, his dog who turns into a jet, Mega Man-style, is present.
Casshern Sins is set for a 2010 release, in two 12-episode sets. Hit the jump for the full press release and a clip from the live-action movie, which I think has a nicer costume design.

FUNIMATION ENTERTAINMENT ACQUIRES “CASSHERN SINS” THE POST-APOCALYPTIC SCFI ANIME SERIES FROM TATSUNOKO PRODUCTIONS
Flower Mound, TX (July 18, 2009) – FUNimation® Entertainment today announced that it has acquired home entertainment, broadcast, digital, and merchandise rights to the first season (24 episodes) of the post-apocalyptic sci-fi anime series “Casshern Sins” from Tatsunoko Productions.
This sci-fi series is directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi (“Blood+”, “Digimon”, “Dragon Ball Z”) produced by Tatsunoko Productions (“Speed Racer”, “Robotech”, “Gatchaman”) and animated by Madhouse (“Claymore”, “Hellsing Ultimate”, “Death Note”, “Gungrave”).
ABOUT CASSHERN SINS Casshern Sins is a revisioning of the early seventies series “Neo-Human Casshern” presented with a unique animation style. This sci-fi android series begins in a time when humans are subjugated by androids. Desperate for freedom, humans summon a mysterious girl named Luna in order to save mankind. Braiking Boss, leader of the androids, fears what this girl may do, and sends three assassins to remove her. The strongest of these assassins, Casshern, manages to track down and kill Luna. This triggers a cataclysmic event which sets in motion the end of the world.
Hundreds of years later, the world is in ruin and both humans and androids fear for their lives. Casshern, who has disappeared since Luna’s death, returns to the world with no memory. Thus starts his journey of self discovery and redemption that will determine the future of both humans and androids.
FUNimation Entertainment will release the first season of the series in two 12 episode sets fall 2010.
The newest anime version of Casshern made Friender(the robot dog) look like a chump, but goes along way to prove that throwing Toru Furuya (Amuro) does alot to improve a show.
I've watched Cassherns Sins off and on. Cool show and I'm glad Fun picked it up. Although it would be even better if the original '70s version was translated and brought over here. And for the love of Tatsunoko bring the new Yatterman series over.
Ive been watching Cashern sins for a while now. Its a pretty dark show but the fight scenes are great. Im looking forward to seeing how the story line unfolds...
Oh and Friender is a G in the show lol...he takes on all comes and dosent back down for a minute...my kind of dog!!
I got like, 6 episodes into Casshern Sins when it was first playing in Japan. It's good, mostly beautiful, but not great. Worth watching for the slick 1970's flair of the graphics at least, if not for the awful use of women.
It's the most mysterious beginning of an anime yet.
I watched the show, it is not great because of the history or the fights, but because of the art involved, both in the visuals and, especially, in the narrative. It's beautiful.
Also, it's funny how an anime about robots talk about life and death in such a poetic way.
