So, while preparing for this year's ecchi (read "hentai") panel we're hosting, I figured you folks might want to know that Magic flying loli girls! is now officially coming stateside. If you don't know about Strike Witches, then my description is all you really need to know. Oh wait, I'm wrong... that title doesn't bring up how the loli's grow tails and animal ears, or that women don't really believe in wearing pants in this universe.

Oh, and how all the magical, flying loli furries are actually based on World War era fighter pilots...

But that's old news... I was literally in a FUNi studio with Gia three days ago when they told us about the show. So, imagine that, and understand how hilarious it is when Sankaku Complex quotes a forum user's statement as the inspiring fact behind "Strike Witches Licensed in US."

What makes it better is that Sankaku Complex was just quoting their own forum user, who was sourcing ANN, who was sourcing Anime Vice, sourcing the statement I heard in a recording studio on Tuesday...

Journalism... it's serious business.

this is the anime that i thought would have the least chance of ever coming to the states. I expect heavy censorship which takes the fun away -_-

Unless you mean that it's funny that they're indirectly sourcing AV, to which I say that is pretty funny.

Bleh...Strike Witches....I'd barely rank it lower than DBE on the Most Painful to watch list.

They sourced their own forums for "breaking" news. Of all the somewhat appropriate people they could have sourced... their own forums would not be one of them.

You should look at HowardForums as an example before making such a blanket statement, as cellphone store employees will post confidential information and leak product info, which means that cellphone and wireless industry blogs (like the one I post for and manage) will scour the site for scoops.

Sankaku's just guilty of not being ethical, and when I reported on the news myself, I made sure to cite AnimeVioe instead of ANN as many others do out of some sick Pavlovian response as Gia broke the news not ANN or Sankaku.

Bashing another site seems a bit pointless. I can see how you may have taken it as a personal insult, but why not discuss it with the site owner instead of making a public attack. I read both sites equally and never really saw it as having rivalry between the two of you.

Most of the time when a competitor gets called out by readers, they can either make the correction and move on, or they can offer reasoning for the transgression and ignore the readership.

Now, when another competitor calls out the transgressor, the same reasoning applies but you can expect that the transgressor will simply dig their heels in and justify why they chose to source from within rather than outside the community.

If "visual culture journalism" (I'm lumping all of the main aspects together for the sake of brevity )is to be taken seriously, then it must abide by the same rules as other news outlets, regardless of their position and it must justify itself not only to the fanbase, but to the general media as well.

@A5q: Stupidity is less of a mitigating factor than one would assume. Just look at Ikkitousen and Eiken.
(What are some other examples?) For the record, my "no-way-in-hell-is-this-coming-over" series is the Zetsubou-Sensei anime.

The sheer amount of pandering that Strike Witches delivers is such, that I don't know whether to be in awe or disgust. And I still can't get over the fact that it got a second season.

I make no judgement of Sankaku.

Well, Del Rey is bringing the Manga, so the chances of the animation seeing the light over here are slightly better than other series. I mean, they brought Pani Poni Dash!

My "no-way-in-hell-is-this-coming-over" series is a surprising pick by the same studio...

No, seriously, they are not the kind of thing that panders to the American Otaku market. It's a great series, very experimental... And that's why it's never coming here. It's not comedy, it's more artsy, and it's not commercially viable.

By the way, did Bandai end up pulling the plug on Shigofumi, sola and True Tears after the huge fsck up release scandal last year?

@HSaabedra, @GuardianOfChaos My original intent was to come off more snarky than scathing. This aim may not have been met, but no serious malice was intended. We don't always source "by the book" because there really isn't a text book of how to do it.

Like, if someone broke news, no matter where I found my news, I'm more likely to want to source them. Unless of course its, say a convention, which has many people putting up the news in a relatively short frame of time. Then I let my personal bias fly.

However, ambiguity comes from things like off the wall color pieces, like when you find random art and youtube videos. Do you source the video's creator, or the guy who posted about it a month ago. He posted the video a month ago, but that wasn't the reason "you" stumbled upon it.

Although I had painted a considerable amount of grey, at the con, sleep deprived, the idea of sourcing your own forums for solid news was the one "wtf" things that was actually "wrong" in my mind.
