Gasp! Yakuza 3 cut more content than we thought photo

We already know how Yakuza 3 is blatantly better than Final Fantasy XIII, but it turns out that it could have been even more blatantly better, because some folks have reported that SEGA cut much more content out of the game than was originally revealed.

It wasn't just the hostess bars and the obscure history trivia minigame that were cut out, it seems that the mahjong, shogi, "loser song" minigames were axed, as well as dozens of side quests. Estimates are placed at about 13% of the content available in the game's first 6 chapters were absent from the English version of Yakuza 3.

And it's not just a problem of most players not knowing what they'll miss. Many of those sidequests were worth experience points and cash used to buy upgrades and items, potentially making the game more difficult or grind-heavy.

I don't really understand why they had to go and do this. Why were they concerned about releasing the game ASAP? Were they in that much of a hurry to get steamrolled by Final Fantasy XIII and God of War III? And it's not as if cutting content suddenly makes an already very Japanese game more appealing to western audiences. After all, it was the constant whining by Japanophiles like myself that convinced them to bring the game over in the first place. Sega's continuing inability to properly gauge its audience is maddening.

All that said, I'm just glad Yakuza 3 is happening at all. There's plenty more content available to play, even with the cuts, and I encourage everyone who's interested to take the plunge. If nothing else, you'll get a good game, and Sega might be convinced to bring Yakuza 4 over in a more complete state.

Wow, this might make me actually not get Yakuza 3.
And by "might" I mean "probably".
And by "probably" I mean "possibly".
And by "possibly" I mean "FUCK YOU IN THE ASS WITH A PINEAPPLE, SEGA".
Listen it REALLY sucks that they made said cuts. I have played like 8+ hours of the game now, it is still very fun and so brutal that it makes me laugh. The mini games in it do not have much effort put in them to start, all play sloppy and little to do. With all that the game would still be a must have for me.
Oh man oh god oh man
lol, Sega.
That couple on the left are making out.

Can't unsee.
Maybe to release the game with full content later for more money
Eh, I'll just buy it used eventually. That way I'm not paying full price for an incomplete game and Sega doesn't get my money for doing a half-assed job.
Maybe it's their way of subtly telling us to learn moonspeak and get the original.
You know, I would be much less annoyed by this if Sega had been honest about it. Instead, they said, "We'll be cutting the hostess clubs and quiz show, but that's it." Still, I am enjoying the game, despite the slow beginning.
Or, maybe this is all an attempt, as I've said in another post, to cut domestication costs. Less translating, less recoding means less money. Sega made it no secret that this release is a gamble for them. They may just be hedging their bets.

Or, the content that was cut may be made available later as DLC. The back of the game case says "Trophies, Add-On Content" as available PSN features. It seems logical, if not exactly ethical, after the statements Sega has made.
I don't understand sega's logic. Its like they don't care anymore.
I would rather not buy cut games.
I hate when games, books and manga are cut and edited because of assumptions that we won't understand cultural differences. I am a nerd and one of my favorite things is reading cultural info parts in the back of manga.

This is what I've been saying from the very beginning, and it's also what a Sega rep heavily implied when he was talking about the hostess club cuts. However, many people seem to be getting the circumstances switched around.

This content wasn't cut to make it appeal more to a Western audience. The localizing team knew that they were going to have to cut corners, so the "will this appeal to the West?" question was used to decide which content would have to take the fall.

In other words, Sega's logic was:
We need to cut something to make it profitable --> There's lot of stuff here; what should we choose? --> Cut the stuff you think Westerners would care the least about.

Sega's logic WASN'T:
We don't think the West will understand this --> Cut it

I'm not saying we should agree with Sega's logic (I certainly have my doubts about it), but we should at least get our facts straight before raging at the machine.
I have no intention of paying Sega for half-assed domestications. Not buying.
Yep, time to break out the Durian attack on Sega. Smell my Durian rage, Sega.
Sega and the Yakuza franchise has always been a total WTF to me.

It's clearly a incredible series yet they always screw up with releasing the US version.

They held out saying no Yakuza 2 forever and then when they had finally released it people had moved on. So then when people complained about not getting Yakuza 3 Sega said no one bought 2. Of course they didn't it was on PS2 when most had moved on to the next gen consoles.

Now they release Yakuza 3 with cut content and during a time frame in which it will be completely overlooked by 2 of the biggest titles of this generation and will use lack of sales as a reason to not bring Yakuza 4 to the US.

They need to fire someone somewhere i think.
"I encourage everyone who's interested to take the plunge. If nothing else, you'll get a good game, and Sega might be convinced to bring Yakuza 4 over in a more complete state. "

That's an weird line of logic, especially when you consider the stated reason for the cuts: financial savings (on a $60 game, of course).

What you're saying is this: "Oh no! Sega cut 13% of the game for financial reasons, figuring we'll buy it anyway and won't know any better! But spend $60 anyway to tell Sega what you really think of the franchise!"

If I'm Sega - a company, BTW, that killed it's last console as it was getting popular, hasn't made a good Sonic game in almost a decade, hasn't gotten Shining Force right since the SATURN and to top it off is brutal to the press corps - I'm seeing "we cut almost 1/5 the game and they bought it anyway! Let's see what else I can get away with with Yakuza 4!"

It's a catch 22. If we get Yakuza, it will be broken. But if we don't buy it, we won't get the broken Yakuza.

I think I'll be over here replaying Skies of Arcadia on my Dreamcast instead, and thinking back to a time when Sega at least pretended it cared about it's customers.
It sucks, but the game is still awesome
this calls for a boycott
