Get to know the Major in the new Ghost in the Shell trailer
Cyborg guro and backstory ahoy
Despite many years of ambivalence and some really bad recent political optics, I think I can finally say that I'm excited to see the Ghost in the Shell live-action movie. The latest trailer does away with the teasing and gives folks a proper look at what to expect from the story.
Put together by director Rupert Sanders and screenwriters Jamie Moss and Ehren Kruger, it looks like we can expect a big ol' mashup of influences, plot points, premises and themes from all across the Ghost in the Shell franchise. In interviews, Sanders hinted that the film wouldn't be a straight retread of the manga or anime's Puppetmaster storyline, and that they looked to, among other things, the "Individual Eleven" arc from Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex 2nd GIG for inspiration.
In a way, I find that an encouraging sign. Departures in style, tone, and even plot are all par for the course when it comes to Ghost in the Shell, and there's no One True Canon that needs preserving at all costs. As for what's in the trailer itself, there's certainly quite a bit of striking imagery on display, including Scarlett Johanssen as the Major, a number of scenes showing off just how much of a cyborg she is. Other scenes include clear homages to points from the Mamoru Oshii's 1995 film, as well as a riffon the robo-geisha scene in Standalone Complex, and some cityscapes straight from Blade Runner.
