Ghibli to adapt Mary Norton's 'The Borrowers' next photo

Hey, guess what today is? That's right, it's December 16th! So now Studio Ghibli has finally announced what their next project is: an adaptation of Mary Norton's The Borrowers, a children's series about a family of little people who "borrow" things from normal humans and hide away, keeping themselves hidden.

The main characters are the Clock family, who live under the floorboards. The main struggle is trying to avoid being seen by the humans and ending up disappearing, which I can only presume that this story is going to follow the young female protagonist's adventures meeting one of the children of the normal humans.

The series has actually been adapted to TV and film several times, most notably a 1997 adaptation starring John Goodman. Will Disney bring him back for the Ghibli dub? One can only hope.

The film is slated for Summer 2010, and will be helmed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi -- his first time directing a film. He's previously worked as a key animator on projects like Spirited Away and Ponyo, so this will be an interesting take. Who's pumped?

Meh?

I was hoping for something more original.
I was hoping for something awesome, and ghibli won't disappoint with this.

I haven't gotten around to seeing Ghibli stuff not directed by Myazaki that i know of. Can anyone care to inform me of some of them perhaps?
I could get down on this.
I never liked the Borrowers but Ghibli could definitely put a new perspective on the story for me.

It's Ghibli. They could turn the Jack and Jill went up to hill poem into something mindblowing.
What Rewarp said.
The borrowers was pretty nice. I think it'll mesh well with Ghibli's style. Let's hope they do it up.
