Ghost in the Shell gets carried away on its own memes
'I Am Meme-jor'
Is there anything more Ghost in the Shell than something getting utterly dragged by the memes it helped spawn? Heck, that's basically the plot of Standalone Complex, when you think about it.
Of course, successful marketing and thematic closeness aren't always one and the same, and I doubt this is what Paramount's marketing eggheads envisioned when they debuted IAmMajor.me, a meme generator intended to promote the upcoming Ghost in the Shell live-action movie.
Fans took a shine to the little gimmick, creating a number of hilarious images that often had little to do with Ghost in the Shell. Others used the tool to take the film to task over the controversy surrounding the casting of Scarlette Johansson as Major (I'll never get over the fact that the movie uses "Major" as a proper name rather than a reference to her rank), and over Hollywood "whitewashing" practices more generally. Still others, true fans of Ghost in the Shell and the work of Masamune Shirow, asked after the manga's infamous "Yacht Scene". You know what I'm talking about.
Either way, the tool's proven flexible, whether your goal is to spark laughs or spread awareness. We've gone through a number of the submissions (and made a few of our own) and collected some of the most interesting below. Check 'em out and tell us about which ones you made!
