Ghost in the Shell live-action gets Rila Fukushima
But who will she be?
The seemingly unending saga of Hollywood's adaptation of Ghost in Shell continues, as hubbub about the long-in-making film has morphed from justified concerns over the quality of the adaptation (which haven't gone away, considering that they got the director of the utterly forgettable Snow White and the Huntsman to run things) to having it and its decision to cast Scarlett Johanssen in the role of The Major come to symbolize the ongoing debate over race's role in casting.
Though that doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the Dreamworks film has added another name to its cast list: That of Japanese actress Rila Fukushima. Fukushima is probably best known for her role as Yukio in The Wolverine and was last seen on Arrow's third season playing the role of Katana, and Game of Thrones' fifth season as a Red Priestess. She joins Johanssen, as well as Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt. The film is set to release in March next year.
It's unknown what role she'll be playing in Ghost in the Shell. For the most part, the fiction's only major female character has been The Major herself, which certainly leaves room for more to be added. If you happen to be curious about just what sorts of departures the new film might make from the source, I wrote up a quick primer on Ghost in the Shell some time ago.
