But seriously, could anyone have expected more from Rockstar? Perhaps it's a sign that the medium is entering mainstream awareness, though I shudder to think that this is truly indicative of How They View Us.
That said, which of the *ahem* conventions bludgeoned in the video above do you feel are still lingering, potentially poisoning the well for future generations? Will this episode convince you to buy into the game's upcoming content pack, The Ballad of Gay Tony?

How They View Us...sounds about right. Everyone I've ever met who didn't like anime justified it with these reasons. Scantily-clad and unusually-mature schoolgirls, mindless destruction, and bad translations. Oh, and the large, expressive eyes. It's annoying that this is how Japanese media is publicized in the States, because all those people that think anime is like this see me as a freak because I like it. (Well, I AM a freak, but this is only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.)
Oh, as far as which ones are ACTUALLY in too many things these days...the schoolgirls thing is often accurate, sadly, but not always. The bad translations aren't even the fault of the creators, but the AMERICAN companies that do the translating, if I recall correctly.
Heh, I bought the Chinatown Wars for PSP a week ago, and this week end I noticed a Princess Bubblegum billboard. Assumed it was just a random thing thrown in for the billboard. Nice to see some consistency across platforms!
That is EXACTLY how they view us. My co-workers saw a Haibane Renmei wallpaper on my work computer once and now all they say is how I like "Purple Tentacle Rape anime". This after seeing an innocent image of Rakka. So yeah, thanks to the media, the entire public thinks anime=porn.
I don't understand why the bad translation trope is still around. While certain things like attack names come across as ridiculous now that we're past the mid 90s it's because they're ridiculous in Japanese to begin with. Companies spend the bulk of their budgets on ensuring that translation is accurate and delivered with as much talent as possible. Some shows don't come out well but on the whole even something like Naruto, which is heavily criticised, is still a good translation.
I made my feelings on this thing clear over at Destructoid, though. I don't find it funny at all but rather than because it offends me (which it doesn't do really) it's because I don't find Rockstar funny.
I personally wouldn't go so far to call Rockstar "They"... It wasn't so long ago that video games were considered more of a subculture too. They haven't in honesty completely penetrated the mainstream yet either. This was obviously meant to be tongue in cheek. I LOLd.
Well, GTA is famous for its satirical approach to everything. I love the games, but other than GTA IV, there has never been a GTA game that took itself seriously.
Unfortunately, the, "anime=tentacle schoolgirl rape" stereotype still exists. I mean, it's not so bad if it's a joke among your friends, but when a co-worker catches you reading Yotsuba&! of all things, and calls it, "weirdo rape comics," you know something is wrong (admittedly, same co-worker also bought into the, "video games are corrupting your children" belief).
Been seein' this same Effing joke for like, fifteen years now... BORING. It's probably funny to someone who's never seen an anime parody before. I don't know. I am getting more numb with each passing year.
I actually found this to be kind of offensive. This is exactly how a large portion of the population view anime and it's fans and a game that will be played by millions of people(most of who are closed minded people to begin with) who see this isn't gonna help the matter at all.
Who cares what other people think? It's your hobby, not theirs. If you worry that someone will judge you- keep it to yourself. Why be offended when taking it in stride is so much easier?
people are stupid, let them believe what they want to believe, you(reading this) and I know the truth, even if they make fun of it anime is slowly going to take over the world ^_^
