Sankei News has brought us some surprising news about the Defense Technology Symposium of 2007 regarding the mysterious topic of the realization of a Gundam (advanced personal equipment system). As you might of guessed, this wasn’t what we were expecting. There's no giant robot, no transforming airplane -- not even a vehicle. This “Gundam” of theirs is in fact a ground combat system that includes a bulletproof vest, a helmet with an eye monitor thing, and a light on top of the helmet (just in case you’re fighting past your bed time).
The helmet display is cool cause it has such neat features as showing the users physical status, GPS, and the ability to play videos (pr0n), but besides that, what the hell!? According to the Ministry of Defense, the project was nicknamed Gundam a couple of years back, probably because some mecha otaku (like me) thought it would be cool to name this non-Gundam thing, Gundam. Despite this letdown, I do not think Japan has given up the chance to be the first to develop a giant robot.
Now on to the good Gundam news, which can be found after the jump.
Our number one man Gackt has given Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam, a nice birthday present for his 66th birthday today: not a Best Buy gift card or a reservation for Final Fantasy XIII-- no, something way better. He game him a reservation for a new album composed entirely of songs from the Gundam universe. Justly named 0078-0088, the album will feature songs recorded for the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam film trilogy and another three cover songs from the first Gundam trilogy.
All I can say is that this is the best birthday present ever. By the way Gackt, since my birthday is coming up as well, how about an album for your favorite Japanator writer? I’m partial to a "Row Row Fight The Power" special God Len remix, if you don’t mind.
Happy Birthday Yoshiyuki Tomino from Japanator.com! Now everybody dance!
That's fantastic. The HUD could say 'kicked by console' when you get fragged, or something, and it would also show you the replay before you respawned.
Oh, wait. Real World = No respawn, doesn't it? Suck.
Wow.....that's a huge letdown....well, back to my original plan I guess...
But yeah, congrats to Tomino-dono!
WHAT WILL ALL THE WHINY, EMO, TEEN BOYS OF THE WORLD WILL DO NOW???
Oh well. I still gots time to see giant mecha before I die. King Gainer is fun too.
...So it turned out to just be Special Forces equipment and smart weaponry. Wy didn't they have that already? Didn't think the JSSDF was behind the times that much. And anyway, it makes sense for them to step up things now, considering Korea's aggressive nature.
ch! If they were just going to do that, why couldn't they just name it after one of those super sentai teams instead? Makes more sense, really.
