I never watched School Days, but now I know what it feels like to experience the ‘Nice Boat’ effect in anime; except this time we get ‘Nice Clouds’. What the hell did you do to the best, if not greatest song on the Gurren Lagann soundtrack, Gainax? This was supposed to be the most epic of epic videos of the Gurren Lagann Music Clip Project, yet they give us some student film instead.
Why Gainex, is this some horrible joke, or is this something so deep that it even blows Neon Genesis out of the water? Well, either way we should have one more left, which I believe will be the Genome fight of his youth; or at least it better be. The only way I can sleep tonight is if they reuse this song for the next video.
One more thing Gainex, Kamina is pissed.
[Thanks for the reminder Kyandi, even though this video is poop]
This is a fucking outrage. I'm fucking raging harder than ever. Honestly, did Gainax just forget about The Flame of Gurren, DID THEY? My stoumach hurts, i feel like i'm going to vomit. This video certainly did not do the impossible, see the invisble, touch the untouchable, nor break the unbreakable. Fucking.
Wondering if maybe this was a fake, I googled around and found Hiroyuki Yamaga's production notes on Gainax's webpage. What it basically boils down to is this:
* I can't draw, so I thought I'd make a PV from still images.
* Since one of the the early themes in planning GL was "wilderness and robots", I went to Australia to find some real wilderness shots.
* The contents are a continuation of the compilation episode (#16) that uses material from the second half of the series, so the CG galaxies were an early addition, and this also allowed me to showcase Kazuki Nakajima's awesome lines.
* The reason I picked "Libera me" from hell is ... because nobody else did *g* It's long, and has a very strong sense of climax. Unfortunately, the "PV from live photography" approach doesn't tie in too well with the "make a parallel world using the characters" approach. I added the footage of a man running and the fake human skull to add a bit of flavor. I think the main point is how everything - the movement of the clouds, the timing of the cuts, the transition from day to night - dances to the music, so *text cuts off in the original - wtf?*
I'm not sure what to think. There are definitely points of the video I really like, but the theme of wilderness doesn't really match the second half of the show very much. To be fair, it would be really hard to come up with something with as much impact as this scene did in the show using still photography. I do like the video, but it doesn't have nearly the impact I would have expected for this song. (And I just finished the series, since I didn't get around to watching it until it came out on DVD, so I get serious goosebumps and tear up a little every time I hear it.)
Come on guys, is it really okay for you to be BURNING all the time like that?
truthfully i thought it was OK towards the END (except for the synced skull that was stupid) and i'd have to agree w/t Virgazone in that they are saving the best for last. remember that Gainax isn't one of the best anime groups of all time just because they used the same medium, they have tried a plethora of things in movies and shows (some good, some worse then this). so all in all this isn't a great vid but just a mediocre one and yes they could have used libra me from hell for the last one but who knows they might have something better planned for grand finale. so to finish this just wait for the next one and stop whining.
Yeah, pretty uninspired. To be honest, I stopped watching after a while, and just listened to the song. I'm waiting for the outraged fan base to "do it properly". Best part is, I don't mean that as a snide challenge, Gurren Lagann has spawned some downright awesome stuff. Not this though.
