What comes to mind when you think of Lovecraftian horrors? Hideous tentacled creatures? Dark cults bathed in blood? Unending madness? Terrors that man should not know? Well, add cute anime girls to that list, because Japan has officially ruined the works of H.P. Lovecraft. According to Anime Vice, the parody light novel series Haiyore! Nyaruko-san is getting an anime adaptation soon. For those unaware of the books, the series revolves around Nyarlothotep, The Crawling Chaos, Him of a Thousand Masks. Normally a shape-shifting servent of the mind-warping Outer Gods that lurk behind our safe view of reality dedicated to spreading madness and chaos throughout humanity, he now takes the form of an adorable little girl who saves a schoolboy from aliens and decides to hang out with him. What. Seriously? Strangely, this actually isn't the first anime based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. 2006 saw a Lovecraft-inspired mecha show called Demonbane. This, though? Cute moe girls are not what comes to mind when I imagine the eldritch horrors of the Cthulhu Mythos. The only thing that could possibly salvage this anime is a heavy dose of tentacled beasts - though knowing Japan, they may have other things in mind.
