Anime Vice has been keeping tabs on Christopher Handley's case, the man arrested for his "obscene" manga collection. On the poor advice of his lawyer, he had pleaded guilty to the charges, and just recently received his sentencing after some delays.
The results of the case are that Handley will be imprisoned for six months, followed by five years of probation for mailing obscene material. The good thing is, Handley isn't being forced to register as a sex offender, which would essentially cripple his life, I'd wager.
It's really unfortunate that things ended up this way for Handley, as I feel he should have fought the case. But the time and money required to do that might have been impossible. Sorry to hear about this, Chris. We were all rooting for you.
No one wants to be that test case. I'm disappointed because I think this was a relatively strong case since Handley had no real-life kiddie porn, but for his own personal sake I understand his fear. And I'm VERY glad for him that he won't have to register as a sex offender.
