Have you flipped your yaru-ki switch yet? Let School IE find it for you
by Brad Rice, 03/02/2009

Browsing Danny Choo's site this morning, I came across this set of ads from a private tutoring school called School IE. And hell, these ads just hit me right in the morning. It's not like they're something that's truly amusing like the Softbank ads, but it's something that I would have to call typical of Japanese ads -- and the reason why I love it. The school will help you find your "yaru-ki" switch, which will get you motivated to try harder and be successful in life.

What this ad has going for it is a combination of absurdity, bad jokes, and less-than-stellar acting. Oftentimes, when I'd be hanging out with my friends in Japan, we'd talk about the ads more than anything. One of the ads that will stick in my mind for years to come is an AU ad that revolves around the pun of "shaberu" meaning both "to talk" and "shovel." It's ridiculously stupid, but I'll never forget it.

Anyways, I just wanted to share a bit of Japanese ad culture with y'all. After the jump is what really makes the ad -- there are two follow ups to it, so I encourage you to check them out.

Ending #2 (Another with a HQ version)
