Unfortunately we don't know whether or not he's truly going old school with pegboards and acetate cels, but apparently Hayao Miyazaki is doing some of the animation for his new short film personally; the Ghilbi team is so busy working on the upcoming feature Karigurashi no Arrietty that the man himself has to do some of his own dirty work. Now, I imagine he isn't actually drawing in-betweens, because I'm pretty sure they still save that job for Korean day laborers and international prisoners of war, but who can say?
Considering how little we know about this new short- which will be ten minutes long, and that is the extent of what we know about it- it's impossible to speculate what Miyazaki may be drawing at the moment, but isn't the idea of it just awesome? You know there's somebody at Ghilbi who checks people's work for errors, and maybe today is the day he has to tell Hayao Miyazaki that he rushed the anatomy in frame #2507 or something. Furthermore, Miyazaki is considering experimenting with internet distribution for his project, so clearly this is someone who isn't afraid of tackling something new even while re-acquainting himself with something old.
It's kind of my dark otaku secret that I've seen very few of Miyazaki's films, and if I needed anymore proof that I need to pay his body of work the proper amount of attention and respect ASAP, this is it. It may not seem tremendously important, but the fact that he's willing to do grunt work that most people in his position would consider "beneath" them is very appealing to me- that's a sign of someone with a true love for their craft, in all its forms and permutations.

And your Miyazaki deficiency is no laughing matter. I prescribe 10ml of Porco Rosso and Laputa, stat!
