Yes, otaku don’t only live in America and Japan, in fact there are otaku in France, Ukraine, and in Finland. As proof Japan Probe posted a video that shows a clip from a Finnish TV program exploring the concept of Japan-loving females in their very own country. It seems that the otaku bug has bit Finland hard, so hard that the girls think that they are in fact Japanese. You can see this for yourself when this documentary shows them without their shoes indoors; nonsense I say!
It’s interesting to see other country’s reactions to this cultural-viral weapon the Japanese have created. Though the reaction seems all the same no matter where you live; which is to laugh at the perpetrator then shoplift at your local bakery. Either way If you are reading this give me a call ladies, at least we have one language in common.
Being an Otaku in Quebec City is hard and manga in french is shit so I need to buy everything online(bless amazon and the free shipping) also the only place that sells this kinda stuff is very limited and it's cheaper online anyway. I don't know if there would be a market here for a game/otaku store but I would love to make one in the future if I can. The only thing we have here is geek stores (Magic, D&D, Board games). And seeing them speak Japanese at the end reminds me I should continue learning it.
As a Finn, this makes me really sad. As a 19-year-old university student, I've faced a lot of prejudice as an anime fan. Why? Because young girls like those literally crowd the streets here. I don't know, but someone might think I'm a pedophile/ebephophile since my hobbies are popular with young girls around 10-17.
I am actually a part of the much smaller segment: Young males 19-30, who don't proclaim their hobby as loudly as them young un's.
Godlen, you are too old for these young ladies. They look 15-18 years old. You should be ashame of yourself.
@Jakovain: I hear you. When I was in highschool most the anime fans I knew were college age, but by the time I went to college, anime blew up and became really popular with the young crowd. Now I'm 23 and feel awkward, because young 13-18 year olds make up the Otaku demographic here in America. Don't know if thats true, but thats what it seems like here.
Everyone is an otaku here nowadays. It's a trend which parents recommend and encourage. Can you see the irony in that?
I remember the good old times when I was still a teen. I used to watch anime and talk about it with some friends, sometimes we were planning to craft cosplay outfits. All this casual joking around without getting flaming red weirdo mark across the face.
When I watch anime from my comp now, I never mention about it to rest of the old community. The prior otakus have become the obnoxious japan-haters due to this new weird population. Serious fucken business.
Or do we have a weirder people now? I get these great Tommy 'sheriff Bell' Lee Jones vibes every time I think about what it was like when I was a kid.
