Infinite Stratos mecha musume anime set for winter

Infinite Stratos mecha musume anime set for winter photo

If you're one of the sci-fi nerd who has been decrying the decline in hardcore sci-fi mecha anime outside the various Gundam shows...well, you'll probably decry this show, too. But hey, mecha is mecha, even if it's mecha-musume.

It's called Infinite Stratos, adapted from the light novel series of the same name written by Yumizuru Izuru. Billed as a "high speed battle romantic comedy", the premise sounds equally straightforward.  Ichika Omimura is drafted into pilot academy because he's apparently the only boy in the world who can operate the Infinite Stratos (IS) weapons system, which is traditionally girls-only. Romance, comedy, and high speed battle ensues.

So yes, it sounds like an pretty typical harem/action show, but the trailer (which you can see below) promises some slickly-animated CG and a voice cast I'm willing to watch at least some of a show for, including Yoko Hisaka (K-ON!!'s Mio), Yukana (Code Geass' C.C.), Asami Shimoda (B Gata H Kei's Yamada) and Kana Hanazawa (Bakemonogatari's Nadeko).

Besides, the fact that there's a male presence at all suggests that there may be at least some semblance of a plot, which is more than one can say for Strike Witches or whatever they come up with should someone decide to adapt Busou Shinki. And yes, I'm aware that that sounds incredibly sexist.

The show is set for a Winter season appearance, so expect it in January 2011.

I love the mecha design at 34 seconds in. I will give this a few episodes if only for the mecha design.
The light novel adaptations seem to be a good streak, so this has some promise.
Ditto on the mecha design. Might try this out. 8D
gives off the feel of a future based harem comedy strike witches... with pants. This is not a bad thing.
Sounds like Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventure
It erased my href so here is a regular link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual!_Parallel_Trouble_Adventure
Slickly-animated indeed. I might have to watch some of this too.
That's it, THERE IS OFFICIALLY TOO MUCH OF THIS MOE CRAP IN ANIME.
AKA Strike Witches: All Growed Up
so basically we got Senjogahara, Tanshi, thats blond chick from strike witches, Ritsu, and every other loli in anime anime series in Mechs. i like to see where this goes.

Let's see...Reach in and pull out:
Mecha Planes
All Girls School
Harem
Gifted Pilot
I think we can work with this...
You can't fool me. This is just more moeshit. And the CG robots are an insult.
I hate mecha with open crew compartments. Its the stupidest thing I ever seen in SF.
@mechwarrior What about fiery explosions and noises in space?
When this first turned up in an announcement on ANN, I thought the concept was total rubbish, and my opinion hasn't changed between then and now. There's no "show" here; there's just a vehicle for one bland guy to be around a variety of checklist-designed girls. Maybe they'll all have different hair colors to make it easy to tell them apart.

I'm sorry, but everything about this plot smacks of "no thought involved." Placing a single person of one gender in an environment composed of all the other gender not only makes "harem" one of the few concepts you can run with, it also grossly limits the amount of plots you can come up with. As tawdry as the concept is, at least throw a couple more guys in there to mix it up (unless they, too, are completely ineffectual types). Guh. Dai Sato, let's go out to drink and complain.
@ittoujuu

Yep, totally agree. I'm not going to have the harem/moe wool pulled over my eyes. Its clear that this is another cliched trope anime series. Just reading that synopsis alone, told me enough about this show, and my not being excited at all.

Harem for fanboys, conveniently uninterupted by other males, only females can pilot the mechs, to make that harem universe seem more credible, when its totally forced.

Come on Japan, this has been done to death in Eva. Stop trying to ride is already wornout coat tails.
I hate how "harem" is a genre of anime.

And I hate how genres like action and mecha can be destroyed by combining "harem" or "moe" with them.

Or "ecchi".

WTF.
Harem sucks.
Moe sucks.
Just watch hentai so you can get it over with.

Oh yes, because you know, Mazinkaiser SKL doesn't exist, nor does the upcoming SRWOG anime. Of course Japanator decides to not talk about those.
I'm going to say something scandalous now.

Come back Yukikaze, lol. At least you knew you were an action show.
