Jamie Hewlett brings the awesome to BBC Sport's Olympics
by Zac Bentz, 07/30/2008

Most of the world is probably familiar with Jamie Hewlett's illustration through the work of his (somewhat fake) band Gorillaz. If not that, then maybe it's his groundbreaking work on the Tank Girl series. Either way, you can insert various permutations of "awesome" and "win" whenever describing his work.

Now he and co-producer Damon Albarn have created an opening for the BBC's coverage of the Olympic games. Equal parts Gorillaz and Okami, the style is a little bit cleaner than some of his earlier work. Reportedly the story is based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West. The BBC version, called Journey to the East, tells the (very brief) tale of a monkey journeying across the land to light the torch at the games. Along the way he picks up a couple friends who help him past various colorful obstacles.

Check out the video above, or watch a slightly higher quality version here. Just in case it vanishes, there are also a few screens in the gallery.

[Thanks to Julian for the tip, and providing a reason for me to post it here. Also, there will be Japanese people at the Olympics, so, that also makes it relevant. ^__^]
