Japan's elderly want to clean up Fukushima themselves photo

About 200 Japanese retirees, that go by the name The Skilled Veterans Corps, have volunteered to take the place of younger employees taking on the daunting task of radiation clean up. Apparently the group is not just any group of old timers, but include retired engineers and other skilled professionals. Their noble rationale is that even if they are exposed to cancer inducing levels of radiation, they probably won't live long enough to feel the effects.

I really do applaud the idea behind this, and find it really honorable that these citizens would sacrifice their lives for the younger generation. This story really emotionally troubles me. Thinking about my grand parents knee deep in nuclear sludge, trying to better a situation that is clearly this generation's to handle, doesn't sit well.

What do you guys think? I'm warmed to think that anyone would willingly sacrifice their health and lives towards the greater good, but I will be absolutely disgusted if this actually plays out.

If they really want to, I say let them do it. Their point about them suffering less from the radiation due to their remaining life being short is valid, and Japan doesn't exactly need more old people.

I know that this is a cold way of looking at it, but it's even colder to subject young people to radiation that may shorten their lifespan dramatically.
Sacrifice? As the organizer of this movement has pointed out, cancer would take many years to develop--longer than they have left to live (altho this being Japan, they should figure quite a few years left). Thus they feel there's no real sacrifice.

The hazard they would have to be concerned with is immediate radiation poisioning, but that can be prevented by proper precautions, and these old guys have not survived this long by being careless.

Umn, they do know that it's probably higher radiation concentration than the government will say, right?
The "Fukushima Fifty" or more precisely, the workers at Fukishima #1 right now were selected because they are older employees and would likely die from natural causes before radiation induced sicknesses. While it's certainly heartwarming to see these elderly willing to help out, I'd imagine that with their age as retirees, employing them would be less efficient and probably have more overhead costs in maintaining facilities for them.
Considering that the Japan is has been graying for quite some time, it's entirely possible that there are more qualified engineers that are retirees then young people.

While it's sad that it's come to this, I do appreciate that these people are choosing to help in whatever way they can - and are willing to put themselves at risk in the process, rather then essentially going "Fuck you, I've got mine".
I think it is really cool of them to make such an offer. It is very Japanese.
... *thinks* ... fucking heroic.
The point should be made that they also want to do this out of guilt. It was their generation that built and accepted nuclear plants, so they feel responsible.

Fucking heroic is right.
its great that they want to help for whatever the reason to me

anything that keeps seniors busy and away from driving a car is good with me.
these guys are boss. seriously.
Well these demostrate how great this people are, but i dont agree with this they have family that will suffer their lost (sons, granchildrens/daugthers etc), besides they dont know for sure how bad the situation is with the level of radiations, therefore they could end up dead in a few months instead of years, i rather prefer to see that the people of the government do this type of actions instead of them.
Fucking badass.

Japan needs more youth to be like this instead of wanting to be celebrities (not kidding this is like the main goal of the younger populations)
