Recently, an article was published on the Nishinippon Shinbun daily newspaper about a young girl who has been employing her falconry skills to help fight avian pests within Japan's Saga Prefecture. Her story is like something out of Pokemon or The Beastmaster, somebody please give this girl her own show!
Misato Ishibashi, a 17 year-old High School student from Takeo City, has been a falconer since she was very young. In march of this year, she finished among the top finalists of an important nationwide bird-training competition, and governor Yasushi Furukawa himself hired her to aid the Prefecture in the extermination of vermin.
According to the Saga Produce Support Division, in the past years the crow population in the area has grown out of proportion. Any given day more than 10,000 crows can be found congregating in trash disposal areas and feasting on farmers' crops. Countermeasures against the birds have cost the Prefecture some 66 million yen in the agriculture sector alone. Things have gotten so out of hand that the government is willing to give falcons a try.
Misato, who has been previously hired by her High School to rid their auditorium of pigeons, asserts that her falcon, Momotaro, will get the job done. "The falcon is a divine punishment against crows. When their eyes meet the glare of the falcon, they will definitely not return" she says without a single doubt in her mind. What a badass.
