*sniff* You warmed my cold heart, Karen, by giving Rurouni Kenshin a shout-out in "favorite shonen manga." I'm a big fan of the author/artist Nobuhiro Watsuki (he's the only artist for whom I own all the Japanese volumes), and while none of his subsequent works was on the level of RK, they're still fun stuff. Some of it, like Buso Renkin, seems to actively satirize the whole "shonen manga" concept, which makes for an amusing read if taken from that angle.

Bleach I liked for the first couple volumes, when it was some weird kids with spiritual power who dressed fashionably and solved mysteries in the real world, but after it became full to the brim with death gods, my interest kinda flagged. Naruto I still do catch up with every now and then, but for the most part, I just haven't been jazzed by any of the new shonen stuff lately. I think my seinen-ality is starting to evince itself...

Crimson Blade:

All I've seen of Embalming so far is the one-shot that was wedged in the last part of the final Busou Renkin volume. It's been a while since I swung by Kinokuniya, but they haven't had the Japanese volumes yet that I've seen (perhaps I'm due for another trip). Based on the artwork I've seen, my main critique is that Watsuki's art style is becoming a bit TOO angular. He started off RK with a very floaty, wispy style, pared down his designs to be really iconic by the middle of the Kyoto Arc, and started becoming a bit more angular with his designs by the Revenge Arc. Then, that angularity continued through Gun Blaze West and Busou Renkin, almost to the point where some characters often look too stylized. I'd like it if he reined his designs in a bit and tempered them with a smoother design sensibility, before they veer off too far in the direction of Yu-Gi-Oh hair crinkles and bladelike clothing edges. Still, though, I always appreciate the exuberance inherent in his art. And he's one of only a handful of comic artists I've ever seen who totally nails the conveyance of speed and force in the still image.

Confession: Aside from getting the Japanese Gun Blaze West volumes and attempting to read them when I was studying Japanese, bought but haven't yet read the series' English release. Just thinking about it, though - a crazy manga in the vein of Rurouni Kenshin (with a bit more shonen tendencies) set in the American old west with crazy manga takes on American frontier legends...that could have been SO AWESOME that it breaks my heart it was canceled after only three volumes. Then again, Kubo Tite's Zombie Powder got canned after only four volumes, and I think it's vastly more entertaining than Bleach.

And for what it's worth, My name is a combo of a NIN referance, and my fave car. The Nissan Zcar. I've owned 3 90`s 300zx's. Not a Halo VG one, honestly never really played it. I was more a Quake 1 and 2 fan. I'm just old like that.

HaloZ: Despite being somewhat exasperated at this point, I do like some of the newer NIN material- particularly some of the more mellow tracks like "In This Twilight" and "Lights in the Sky." It's just that now I tend to like NIN stuff on a track-by-track basis, rather than feeling the all-consuming love I used to feel.

I've been dragging my feet on How to Destroy Angels, I really ought to check that out and find out what HAPPY Trent sounds like.
