Japanator AM Episode 2: Embarrassing Listener Questions photo

Even though the weather was conspiring to take away Jake's internet and delay the podcast, here's Japanator AM episode 2, totally on time! You might say that it's on time just by virtue of the fact that we never told you what time to expect it, but meh, being suspicious of everyone like that just isn't good for your health, son.

This week, we had enough reader questions that we decided to make them the main focus of the show. If we didn't get to yours this time, never fear; we'll probably do another questions-dedicated episode soon enough. You can listen to the show here, and I apologize in advance if you feel scandalized. I tried to stop all the fetish talk, but NO, the cast was unmoved by my heartfelt pleas. I am as PURE AS THE DRIVEN SNOW here.

Hit the jump for my especially pure show notes.

Special thanks to Fifth Dream for asking the moe question, because I think we may have skipped over your name while in the throes of our desire to bash moe(!) Won't happen again! Also, you can check out the Jdrama list that Tim and Colette were talking about, if you so desire.

There is certain...material...that was cut from this episode, but I am not at liberty to say what will become of it. I mean, I don't even know what's going on with it because I'm too busy planning the next episode to pay any attention to this one anymore, but I've been assured that something is happening. By the way, I've forgiven Jon for not liking Doctor Who, because all that means is that he still has room to grow as a person.

i got super excited seeing this. i loved the first one. i'm sure this is going to be even better.
YES ANOTHER ONE
@ Karen your forgiving Jon, that's great...

Remember we (Project Haruhi) had him first..
As for converting him to Doctor Who.. Highly doubtful in my humble opinion.
Tom Baker, Jon Pertwee and K-9 FTW...
Yay, thank you for the new episode. I will listen to it soon.
i waited so long for this, its brilliant keep it up.

also,BEST ENDING EVAR
RE: That Queens Blade figure one of you mentioned with the milk/semen, you probably saw it on ANN, there's a review up with it over there: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/astro-toy/2009-12-06/with-rob-bricken/revoltech-queen-blade-nanael

Also I should start listening to this podcast from now on.
Hey Karen!

Yo mama is so fat that when she stepped on a scale, her acceleration from rest resulted in a force between the two conductors of 6.0 to bi-tensor com-flex 23 newtons-per-minute and the magnetic flex around the closed curve was proportional to the algebraic sum of electric currents flowing through that closed curve.
lol gremlins
This was great. I'm curious if Brad will ever make an appearance on the podcast.
Listening to it right now :)

I tend to disagree on manga being a time constraint. Reading books and watching anime gobbles up alot of time, reading manga doesn't take that long. I usually read manga while commuting from and to work, and I'll usually finish reading a manga in one day. All in all it takes about 1,5 hrs.

The price is a big issue for me though.
$14 per volume sucks, considering you'll be done with it within a day. When an epic series runs longer (Monster) this only becomes a bigger and bigger issue.
Pluto is even worse: $20 per volume. Yikes.

Piracy issues aside, reading manga online is just not the same. I've hardly ever bothered with that.
A manga takes me half an hour a book but dubbed anime I can get some work done while it is on. (every anime has boring parts, or I might have seen it already and just want to see the good parts or when it gets good)

So anime actually takes me less time since the time I spend on it can sometimes also be spent working :)
Anime usually covers way less ground per episode though... A manga volume translates to more than a few episodes.

Just finished listening to the podcast. I have to say: The Hanamaru observations from Jake were absolutely hilarious. I propose a recurring "Jake's Notebook" segment. Or rather, I demand it!
RSS Feed or iTunes please. :-)
@Arcade Ness: Karen banned me from the podcast, truth be told. She knew I was Bad News Bears.
"YOU'RE FLUSTERING ME."
durarara rocks
Did you really talk about comedy/drama and not mention Cowboy Bebop?!
I thought Full Metal Panic was atrocious. By and far it's the worst series I've ever completed. I can't think of a worse example of a show that failed to properly mix different genres, partly because it tried to be about 15 different distinct genres and because it tried to partition them completely and have the same cast of characters in what amounted to different shows. It's awful.

Also, short hair for the mother-fucking win. Military short is creepy but Ayanami short is amazing. Ironically, blue hair is also incredibly attractive to me for some reason.
Mix Genres? Let me guess, most of your issues are from Fumofu? By which I mean the filler series that happens between the two main story based seasons, and was meant to be off the wall and random.

Heck, the 3rd season says "The Second Raid".

Aside from that filler season I am unsure what you could be referring to that was done worse than many other anime.
You're welcome. XD I'm honored that my question spawned the Best Defininition Of Moe Ever. You guys put a lot of my feelings about the moe trend(?) into (better) words.
@ Rangoric

I started with the first one and it was a colossal pile of shit. Before I stopped going to the ANN forums I became reasonably well known for my hatred of FMP.

And how can you possibly be confused by what I mean regarding mixing genres? It starts off as a hardcore military show and then the next episode they're in fucking high school acting like Love Hina rejects.

Also, COLETTE YOU CHEATED! Way to try and sneak under the radar during the omake.
Thank you for putting in my question.
As expected, I enjoyed this one too. It took a few too many trips to tangentville, but I didn't mind too much, overall. Not when I laughed out loud about the Hanamaru Gremlins crawling up the bodies of standing adults and having the best laugh I've had all week as the crew tore into the cut-and-paste appeal that is moe. I think what makes this podcast noteworthy (well, I say that, but we're just at episode 2) is the chemistry between the cast members and how they play off each others' ideas and responses. Looking forward to episode 3.
Awesome podcast guys and gals, can't wait for episode 3!

Karen you said my name right so no worries.
I really liked this ep of AM. I just downloaded Anime Pulse's podcast on my iPhone and WOW when compared to them u guys are simply put.....AMAZING!.... So yeah... Good job THANK YOU and keep up the wonderful work!

PS. I want to be a guest speaker!
Hey guys and girls, firstly thanks for answering/discussing my question ^^ and secondly (just to clear this up) I am indeed a girl and not a guy - for realz hahaha I seriously laughed so hard when you guys said I was probably a guy because of my screen name .. but anywho, I enjoyed the show - keep up the good work!
Thanks everybody! DoriFAU, right now we have six people which is already kind of pushing it, but who knows- we might have guests in the future once we get more comfortable with the format.

Jon, how could you! My mother has been trying so hard to adhere to her diet, and for you to just come in and...*sniffle*, you MONSTER.
Good job everyone, Karen you're great at MC and all.

I think more alcohol and less moe hating will make this podcast 100% better
You guys really need to hurry and put out 3 more episodes so that you can submit this to iTunes. I download just about everything directly to my iPhone using my work WiFi and I hate connecting the phone to my PC. Yes, I am asking you to do this for ME exclusively...lol.
great job guys loved the podcast
I didn't cheat Mad March! I swear! :3
I read that Yookoso is actually a sub-par tool for learning Japanese. Let me put it this way; I've been using it in class for about three years and I've still in elementry level *at beast*.
I keep reading Genki is a step up from Yookoso.

Oh, I love short hair!! So many interesting styles from so little. Bonus points for headbands and clips.
