Oh, episode 17 of Kimi ni Todoke is gonna make you guys melt. I've watched it three times and I still can't get enough of how cute it was.

Enjoyed the 'cast once again, everyone. I think I finally found out that it's Jon whose voice I like the most. He sounds like this nice guy I know from work; it's an oddly soothing voice. Anyway, notes from underground!

1. The NA release of the original Mobile Suit Gundam never included the Japanese voice tracks (not sure about the movie trilogy; I saw those in English, but the DVD versions might have subs too). I remember when people pressed for inquiry, Bandai gave this lame-ass excuse like "The Japanese audio masters are too messed up to use for this production." But then like...a couple years later, I think they re-released the show on DVD in Japan. Say what now? I was actually gonna buy MSG, but I opted out when I found out it was English language only. I love the English language, guys, but c'mon. Incidentally, am I the only one who thought Turn-A was really cool?

2. Someone - I think it was Karen - was talking about how some of their favorite relationships in fiction were from anime. I found that kind of interesting, since I've so often seen the position leveled at anime that its relationships are somehow sub-par because they lack the "realistic nuance" of the relationships found in any live-action series. Personally, I've always found that anime's caricaturization of some types of relationships brings what's special about them into clearer relief. That's doubly true for relationships that -could- happen but end up not happening, which I think anime and manga often handle with more grace and sentiment than I see live-action stuff do.

3. The question came up of "How long do you give an anime series before you decide whether you drop or continue it?" I'm a really patient viewer; I hate it when I decide to discard something early and then later I get told "You stopped on episode 6?! But episode seven is where it really got hot!" I tend to give a show, at minimum, about a DVD's worth of episodes (4-5-ish). I agree that first episodes tend to be really deceiving, in that they are often really NOT indicative of the tone or pacing of a series. They often seem to be designed as this flash-pizzaz bomb with little to no substance, where the production team throws tons of money at it to make it look like a top-quality production. But it's often not until a few episodes in that I really get a feel for a series' flavor, so I always make it a point to wait and see what happens after the rock concert smoke clears.

Random Aside: they need to release the Nodame anime. It just doesn't work right as a manga. Classical music needs to be heard!

I don't understand how you guys ever pick anything up if you only watch one episode of a show. I'll decide before I even see things based on pedigree but going into a show totally cold and not watching more than one episode? That makes no sense.

About Sora wo otoshimono, the main character was indeed human trash at the start of the series, but at least in the manga, he becomes a more decent and possibly likable person as the story progresses.

@Jon: Actually I really don't think you did (at least not in comparison to the rest of us), but the final edit might have made it sound that way- I can tell you why in more detail later if you'd care to know.

@"why didn't you mention so-and-so" Clearly, romance in anime is a HUGE topic and we didn't half cover it- we'll probably revisit it again sometime soon. But yeah, I'm kicking myself now for all of the couples I could have brought up >

Anyway, we have no specific plans for guests at the moment- still nailing down the format and whatnot- but we'll let you know if that changes.

On a side note, I hate Gundam. I have retro goggles for Wing (which does have objectively awesome Gundam designs and Duo is almost a well done character) but on the whole I find the series poorly written and mawkish. The fact that the inventor of Gundam also made Garzey's Wing kind of shows what I think of his ability as a writer.

Am I the only person that actually liked the campiness of G Gundam a lot more than the superserious shows that make up the rest of Gundam series?
