Japanator AM Episode 5: Jumping the Loli photo

Our second listener questions episode takes longer to devolve into debauchery than the first one did, which is probably a good thing. This week, in the absence of Jon we discuss Super Dimensional Fortress Macross on Hulu, Battle Angel Alita, Katawa Shoujo again, and Bloody Monday- but not in that order. There is also a void where a lively discussion of Karigurashi no Arrietty would be if Ghilbi ever felt like releasing any information about the film. You can listen to episode 5 here.

Honestly, logically I think Ghilbi is absolutely entitled to hold off telling us anything about the film- I just wish we knew more about it for selfish podcasting reasons. It's an occupational hazard, I tell you. Hit the jump for notes and stuff.

There is a spoiler for Fullmetal Alchemist, however it refers to something that happened in the first series and not FMA:Brotherhood, so I doubt that anyone really cares.

WHOOO my question made it in

and how did you know i was swedish?

oh,and you did prounounce my screen name right, wich is very rare
I think pronouncing niche as "nitch" has been made acceptable because Americans write most of the dictionaries and also can't pronounce things correctly. It's easier to screw up and cover your tracks then to train Americans as a whole to understand that there are words to be spoken without an American accent. And yeah, I'm being an unnecessarily large dick about this but it's because accents/language is one of the few things I've always been good at and being a braggart is one of my more visible character flaws.
@Mad March Harris: I can't remember which linguist it was, but I remember reading that it was actually the other way around- that it is supposed to be pronounced nitch (in English at any rate), but people started saying "niiish" because they thought it sounded more cultured.

One of the reasons why I find reading up on linguistics so fascinating is because there's a lot of things that are reversed like that- like the way everybody thinks that the plural form of cactus can only be "cacti", even though that's following Latin grammar as opposed to English. In English grammar 'cactuses' SHOULD be perfectly acceptable, but the latinized version has gained so much popularity that even spell-check accepts cactuses as wrong:).
And to clear something up, English is NOT Latin based.
Another big example of an anime that doesn't sexualize little girls that you forgot: Gundam
I might be entirely wrong, but when you guys talk about Luca, you couldn't possibly be talking about Tokyo Akazukin's Luca, could you? Out of the images in my mind of that particular Luca, drawing art of him (and subsequent "member-censoring") would result in something that I think truly needs to be the headlining image on a story.
As a Biology major, I've heard the 'nitch' pronunciation a lot more.

Who would win Trigun or RoboCop?

What would your guys // gals porn stars name be?
The whole thing about making young girls appealing in series is probably an executive decision to try and expand an audience, there are shows that don't do it, mostly sports ones. Hajime no Ippo, Major, Whistle!, Slam Dunk, and a bunch of other which elude me at the moment, but to my memory and knowledge each show was mostly about the trials of a main character and their efforts in honing their respective techniques.
If you can get so many people to just listen to you talk for an hour and a half every week, then you definitely qualify as an awesome otaku
Genji Glove:

Trigun. Vash's skill enough to throw pebbles into a middle of a gunfight to deflect bullets. Robocop is basically the equivalent of one of the random mooks he fights in the early part of the show.
Is anyone else having trouble with the RSS feed?
Yeah, the RSS doesn't jive with iTunes. I keep getting failed downloads.
In regards to the "niche" pronounciation, all I can add that in Dutch the pronounciation is "niiish", as is the french pronounciation (niche is french for "making a nest", which is where the term originates from)
But due to americanisation, I can imagine "nitch" is acceptable as well.

In terms of non-loli sexualised anime shows with children starring in them, I implore you all to watch Aishiteruze Baby.
Comment: Overall, the show was great. There are a bunch of awkward silence moments though, but still... great.

I gotta agree that Durarara is going to survive this season. It's going great in my opinion. Can't wait for...

Episode 6.
Crap, this is bothering me now- I have to find that book I read and re-read the etymology of that word. Must...satisfy...nerd curiosity....
@ Karen

It looks like it has Latin and then French roots. Being Canadian, I'm quite confident it would be "neesh" in French but this might be an old example of someone other than the English/Americans butchering foreign words.

@ Rangoric

English is based on nothing. It's a hodgepodge of all the other dominant European languages and now has loan-words from everywhere. It's why it's such an absolute mess for other people to learn it. Although German is reasonably close and they're in the same language family.
Thanks for answer two of my questions, I feel so special!
Sorry my first question was so awkwardly written, I want to touch upon the subject, but I didn't know what ask.
Also to answer my own question, Trapeze and um Ghibi films.
Okay, this isn't as good as finding the book again, but after some cursory interweb research, it looks like the etymology of the word is in doubt- in french it's 'neesh', but the original term may come from the latin "nitulus" or "nidus", which is closer to the English pronunciation.

I think what this boils down to is, if it originally comes from latin, the French pronunciation doesn't take priority over the anglicized one- however there's a certain view with French that it takes priority over everything by virtue of being French. Like, because the Academy mandates proper language, that leads people to believe that France is the ORIGINATOR of proper language- but that's only true in regard to French.

@Invader Alex: I think we answered your older questions and not your newer ones, whoops ^^;;. Anyway, if it ever sounds like I'm making fun of the way you worded a question I don't mean to, it's just the awkwardness of me trying to read the question without necessarily copying it verbatim.

@Gush: I think I left one or two silences in because it made the eventual response that much more entertaining- to me anyway:).
@Karen, you answer one older and one newer question. I was just saying that I have really bad grammer on the internet and anything else that it is written because I drop out alot of words when I write and I just have bad spelling and this is a run on sentence. Don't worry, I feel honored to have 2 questions answered.
@Karen, if there was a possibility of an anime series crossover what would you want to see and why>?

the show is great i usually am up at 3am waiting for it
great show you guys I'm really interested in more Jdrama talk, it seems like I'm missing out on the new stuff because I'm re-watching some of the older drama's I've missed out. (it's like over 10 years of drama I haven't seen.)

I really like how you guys talk about the older anime shows. Macross is one of my favorites as well. As I watched through original Macross the whole love triangle confessions isn't in the original Macross! I was really shocked to know how many changes harmony gold did, but it was one of the most memorable anime shows I watched when I was younger. It was such a great show and still is. The other seasons are also on Hulu which is great I can re-watch the New generation season and they did a couple of changes with that as well (must of been a lot of editing during the broadcast on tv) The whole scene where Hikaru checks out Minmei's ass is pretty funny.

I remember watching Battle Angel Alita OVA when I was 10 years old, that was such a beautiful OVA, did you know that the creator continued the story of the manga a couple of years ago? I've been meaning to check it as well.
Let's just classify niche with epitome in the list of english words that can be pronounced more than one way.
As long as the person who is on the receiving end of however Niche is pronounced and understands what the sayer is saying then it shouldnt matter..

=p
Artbooks. I have some.
@Karen
That's alright. I'll be rooting for the next episode.

i can't wait to hear "eggplant" being said again. :D
