Let's make one thing clear: This newest episode of Japanator AM is good. Maybe not "Brad Rice reading erotic fanfiction before orgasming in his booming voice" good, but everyone this week has a lot of cool and funny things to say to make the next 45 minutes of this podcast fairly entertaining to listen to, if I may speak so conceitedly on behalf of us all. If anything, you should take my word for it: I had to edit these voices together for hours on-end, listening to these assholes...
Hopping on this time for us, as usual, is our friendly reviews editor Hiroko Yamamura and our dude on location Elliot Gay. Joining us for their second and first time respectively this week are Salvador G-Rodiles with Josh Totman, as well as our newest addition to the crew, Michelle Rodanes. Is she mature and well-mannered to contribute to our conversation, or is she really creepy and socially awkward to the point that we just kick her from our Skype call? Well, I don't want to say anything to ruin the fun for you all, but either one makes for a great first impression.
This week, we talk NONSTOP about the stupidest crap, but it's the kind of talk that everyone can enjoy: trash-talk. Not much is spared this episode, as we range from typical Gainax controversies like Panty and Stocking and the inevitable Neon Genesis Evangelion debate, to the more subtle bashing of Star Driver and Megazone 23. We also discuss "popping the anime cherry", exercises in patience with Revolutionary Girl Utena and Record of Lodoss War, as well as our standard catch-ups on the current Winter season and what we've been doing/watching. Amazing.
Also, say hello to another installment of Japanator Aftershow, a separate download featuring all of the bloopers, outtakes and extra stuff that we recorded that there just wasn't enough time to include. More Evangelion, more Elliot talking shit, and more of us being jaded and unloved. Hit the jump for all of this and more!
What's New This Week:
-New Guest: We're happy to have with us this week yet another new member to the Jtor crew, Michelle Rodanes, whose sarcastic remarks and jaded sense of humor are a welcomed addition to the rest of these cynical pricks on this weeks podcast.
-PackedCast!™: There's six people on tonight's episode, so be sure to nail those voices down to a name or face, because this shit is getting talkative.
TIMECODES:
RunTime: [43:04]
00:00 - Aftermath of pulling a prank on Elliot.
00:45 - THEME SONG ["Milk Crisis" -- The Go! Team]
01:44 - Introductions [Elliot, Hiroko, Marcus, Josh, Michelle, Salvador]
08:45 - 2012 Winter Season Discussion - I take back a few harsh word I said last podcast about a certain show, and we breifly talk about Moretsu Space Pirates.
10:40 - Black Rock Shooter Simulcast- Michelle talks a little about 14-year olds and how little girls are soulless and why it's best to never have more than one friend. Some anime discussion is sprinkled in.
14:29 - Star Driver Film Discussion - Fabulous.
16:01 - Revolutionary Girl Utena Discussion - Which is a better spiritual successor: Star Driver, or Muwaru Penguindrum?
17:55 - Feature -- Anime Reflection: We attempt to attach an age to our names as we reflect waaayyy back to stories of when we were first watching anime. Hiroko begins with a couple certain titles...
18:35 - Elliot continues with a story about his uncle and sister...
20:11 - Josh talks about the first time he bought anime.
21:08 - Michelle talks about Cyberpunk and the great titles she's watched.
21:59 - Feature -- All of the reminiscing is COMPLETELY HALTED due to the following Evangelion / Raxephon debate that ensues between us all, which is understandably followed up by a Madoka discussion as well. We get no where with it.
30:15 - Nearly ten minutes later, we come back to the previous topic, with Marcus talking about The International Channel, as well as Sal talking about Toonami.
34:42 - We talk about what shows make us just increasingly upset the more we watch it: Panty and Stocking, Lagrange, .hack//sign, and even this seasons' Poyo Poyo are all mentioned, but by whom? Check in here to find out.
39:38 - Closing - We talk a little bit more, wrap things up, and say our goodbyes to you all!
41:44 - Ending Song ["Polish Girl" -- Neon Indian]
NOTES:
-We didn't take a whole lot of breaks this week; as you can probably tell, we jumped from one subject to another to another to another to help fill in these 45 minutes for you fairly easily.
-Before the show, we ended up waiting for Elliot to work his ass off to get a connection before we ultimately hung up on him, not two seconds after he finally got hooked up with us. Hence, his bitter greeting.
-This week was a lot of fun to record, if only because it was the most sloppy, unprofessional podcast we've done yet. Oddly enough, I feel it turned out to be the best, most engaging show once it had been put into editing form, if only because of my desperate attempts to keep topics going to save this week from being a failure.
-This week, our Skype call lasted: 2hrs 40mins 36secs
