Japanator AM Episode 7: Let's Draw Magma photo

This week, we discuss old anime that we wish people would watch and talk about more, why you would elect to copy from Bleach if you had every manga in the world to choose from, and I learn that a minor in Japanese does not necessarily mean that you won't mispronounce random anime character's names on occasion. I would apologize to Haruhi, but to tell you the truth she's such a bitch I don't even care. You can listen to it here if you are so inclined.

Hit the jump for show notes and the usual nonsense.

Show notes of things that are notable:

News:

0:0:53- Hostess bars cut from American version of Yakuza 3- we disapprove. We disapprove MUCHLY.

0:6:23- New Haruhi novel announced for April, we try to care

0:8:19- This Beckii Cruel video defies explanation

0:15:33- Adult Swim to get extra hour, in theory this is good

0:18:30- Nick Simmons copies Bleach, plays dumb

0:23:50 Break

Topic of the Week:

0:24:53- Classic anime you might have missed: Serial Experiments Lain, Naussica, Crest of the Stars, Venus Wars, Zillion, Gunbuster, Battle Angel Alita, Dragon Half, Ursei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer, Devilman, probably some more I forgot so sue me

What we've been watching/playing/etc.

0:52:09- Tim now has the right to insult Dance in the Vampire Bund, therefore he does

0:56:33- Durarara!!: Ben and I get excited while everyone else looks on incredulously

01:02:10- So Ra No Wo To: I KNEW this show was all about holding in your pee

01:05:22- Railgun: Jon will eventually miss you and your stunning mediocrity

01:05:58- Jdrama, now with more cast participation! Yasuko to Kenji, Code Blue 2, and Bloody Monday 2 really is the Japanese 24, Ben confirms

01:18:00- BONUS KDRAMA segment! Coffee Prince, and we fear Kdrama

Omake

0:22:09- Japanese figure skating, Sailor Moon Cosmology in regard to poor demoted Sailor Pluto, and uh...stuff. See, we were a little light on omake last week, so there's plenty of nonsense in this week's episode.

Here's the Sailor Moon image we were discussing:

Usagi would never really do this...right?

And I'm not including a picture of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon actress Alisa Dubrow, because I realized that she's half-English and that's probably why a certain 14-year-old English girl looks like her. Never mind!

You can e-mail any questions and/or comments to JapanatorAM@Japanator.com; we may save your question for a listener questions episode, or we may answer you right away- or maybe we'll do both. The system isn't quite a well-oiled machine yet, but trust me, we will do SOMETHING with your question.

JAPANAToR AM IS GO!!!!!!!

Will listen later today at some point, can't wait!
Heya, any updates on iTunes or the RSS feed working in iTunes? Still getting 8006 errors unfortunately.
It came out at the beginning of the workday instead of the end? Now I'll be thinking about listening to it all day, but have to wait 'til I get home. D:

Ah well. I'm looking forward to hearing you guys wave the banner of "classic anime," so once I've given it a good listen, I'll post up some thoughts.
Man, Zillion? Really? It's neat that it was basically the genesis of Production IG, but it seems like the epitome of generic 80's shonen.
Admittedly, I was a lot younger when I first saw it. I still plop the old master system game in from time to time, though.
Yeah, the Master System connection is pretty fun trivia, and it's definitely important for the IG thing: Without Zillion, we might not have Ghost in the Shell and all these other IG properties! I agree it's historically significant, but I've tried to sit down and watch a few episodes and could just never muscle through it.

I do love the idea of god giving people guns, though.
Once again, thanks for letting me talk about "Yakuza" on the podcast.

I feel like I should clarify my opinion on it, in case anyone interprets my apathy on the hostess segments for apathy about the content cuts. Frankly, ANY sort of cut content would greatly concern me, regardless of how much I cared about the content that didn't make it. It means that the higher-ups at Sega still don't have faith in "Yakuza" being any sort of success in America. So, despite the fan rally that helped get us "Yakuza 3" in the first place, the localizing team is still facing an uphill battle. Which means that there are now THREE possible outcomes instead of just two, and only one of which is good.

1) The game sells poorly, confirming Sega's belief that Americans don't care about the franchise. We never get another "Yakuza" game.
2) The game sells well enough, but what Sega takes away from this is: Americans don't care about cut content; therefore, it's okay to cut corners to maximize profits in the West.
3)The game sells well enough to convince Sega that Americans DO care about the franchise. "Yakuza 4" comes out completely intact.

This is why I advocate buying "Yakuza 3" despite the content cuts if you really like the games. Yes, there's a chance Sega might go with Door #2 even if it sells above expectations; but if it sells poorly, then Sega will almost assuredly pick Door #1. So, between buying and boycotting, I'd rather take the path that is least likely to lead to weeping and gnashing of teeth.

And now some shameless self-promotion:

If you, too, think my voice is sexy, you should listen to Bakacast, which is now on iTunes!

Okay, I'm done for now. I'll be back to comment on the episode as a whole once I finish listening to it.
I'm sorry Korean actors aren't as handsome as Japanese ones -_-U (seriously, I'm Asian descendant and can't differentiate between the two, let alone any other.)

It's obvious we're all crazy about Japan here, so I'm not surprised about that statement.
You guy and girls are amazing!

MOAR MAGMA!!!! lmfao

keep it up.

I am not an Idiot :(
I'm glad to hear someone on this site sticking up for Naruto. I'm an anime noob. Only the big-name stateside stuff has dug the hooks in up to this point in my life, but it wasn't DBZ or Rurouni Kenshin or Yu Yu Hakusho or even Miyazaki that made me decide that I needed to stick my head up and look around at what else anime had to offer. It was Naruto. I'm about to be done with the second arc, (episode 80 is tomorrow for me), and I can honestly say that this is some of the most compelling fiction I've ever followed. The characters are immensely likable, the action works so well that it's made me a bit distraught that nothing this good exists in American television or film, and apart from a few exceptions, the drama unfolds at just the right pace. I don't know if I could ask for much more out of a show about magical ninjas.

Also, I think the NausicaƤ/Mononoke comparison is a natural one to make. Of all of Miyazaki's films, these two clearly parallel each other the most. The theme of reconciliation between man and nature is present in his other works, of course, but not quite to the extent that it informs the plot of his two most respected action epics.
And because you were talking about Alita in the podcast, http://io9.com/5484049/battle-angel-alita-plot-details-have-been-decided
Sadly, we will have to buy yakuza 3 to ensure we get 4. Though, there's still no guarantee that they won't have do any strange stuff with the localization of that again, but we can hope. About Captain Planet, Mahti was the saddest character. In the episode where the future is messed up by Wheeler who prevents his past self from getting the fire ring, Mahti's power was only good for getting him pocket change from stranger he was begging for money. Now, that is a sad sad power. Oh and I don't understand the argument about if a show's first episode not being captivating that the rest of the show probably would not be either, I remember the first episode of Sora no wo to(which has a moderate amount of acceptance amongst japanator staff), and it was the most inane and boring thing I've sat through in a while. I mean a girl meets a soldier as a child, girl later wants to be a soldier, rides train to city, randomly water fights with people in city, plays trumpet badly at the end of episode?
You know what, I have to stop doing other things while listening to this podcast. I forget what you're talking about by the time the discussion makes me want to look up the show, but I can't just stare at a white screen for an hour...

Show notes are helpful, though, which usually save the day.
Illegal booze brewing is called bootlegging; you had it right. Moonshine is a type of homebrewed alcohol that is kind of like American absinthe (in that it's absurdly alcoholic and terrible tasting).
I still need to watch Lain, since it's by Yoshitoshi ABe, who did Haibane Renmei. And I do so love Haibane Renmei.
Great show guys and when everyone does their introductions, Ben needs to quote a random FLCL line every show, that was awesome.
Great episode guys. I'll have to check out Crest of the Stars and I started torrenting Bloody Monday and Yasuko to Kenji.
Haha...thanks, Jon, for isolating that Moe segment of the human genome. Now, we can eradicate it for the good of humanity.

I liked the staff discussion of "favorite anime that doesn't get much press" - I was surprised how few of the suggestions I'd seen myself, even though I knew of most of them (I can't honestly say I recall Venus Wars, though). It makes me want to sit down and check out some of these less-explored but still merit-worthy series.

Also...I'm biased here because I've seen most of Voyager and not that much DS9, but Voyager is definitely a better series (sans like...the first three seasons; those were kind of jank). DS9 is like "We won't explore new life and new civilizations; we'll wait for adventure to come to us!" The Defiant was a badass ship, but even it couldn't save DS9 from its boring feeling of being stuck indoors. I mean, if you're running a series that has a -shapeshifter- in it and that fails to be awesome, something's gotta be wrong there.
Bloody Monday!

love it, want more of it!

thanks for telling us about it!
MOAR CONVERTS!
I love it when when podcasts verbally abuses its audience! *subscribed*

Cowboy Bebop The Movie felt like a really drawn out episode. It had the elements of the series, but the series itself already spoke for itself, so the film was essentially filler. Good filler, mind you!

Classic anime you might have missed: Patlabor! To an extent, Boogiepop, too. It was somewhat well-known when TechTV (R.I.P.) was airing it, but it's a series that had potential to become something really noteworthy, then for some reason just disappeared from fan's minds. There were light novels and spin-offs (Seven Seas published a few), but I guess they didn't take off.
It would be great if the rebooted the series. There was good sci-fi/thriller stuff here that fans today could appreciate.
