Also, I'm a-okay with hearing about video games that are topically appropriate. Although I'm probably more an anime fan than a game fan, I've had a much longer history with game-related websites and forums, because my general perception was that the gaming community gave better discussions than the anime community. I still tend to stick by that, though Japanator is one of the first anime-related websites where I felt compelled to comment with any frequency. If you drop any significant spoilers about FF13, though, I will be sad.

Concerning Karen's bewilderment at that comment on her Otaku Sex Industry post -- one user expressing his distaste for an 'independent woman' -- I'm fairly sure I understand what he was talking about (he himself likely doesn't grasp the subject with full clarity & is only possessed by a vague frustration).

Nonetheless, that topic is an EPIC social issue in Western nations ... inappropriate for commentarial fodder in this thread.

Ah, I enjoyed that. You know, it's strangely entertaining when you guys are taking pot-shots at each other (and at Dale North, who could be a special guest star one day without knowing what you've said about him in the past). So...play that orange range, Brad. Play it loud.

One point that Karen brought up really interested me - that whole idea about "I'm not interested in these shows, but I'm so interested in what people have to say about them that now I'm gonna have to watch them to be a part of it." I find a lot to agree with there; I'm the same way on a lot of counts. It's like the "watching a movie in a theater" experience - sometimes, even if you don't like something, seeing and being a part of the public reaction can be its own source of entertainment. And at times, public hubbub can fill you with enough curiosity to go check out something you'd otherwise just shake the holy water on and be done with it. Hell, I even watched a couple episodes of Ladies vs. Butlers recently, and will probably at some point watch K-ON!!, even though in both of those cases, I didn't suddenly think those series might actually be my kind of thing. Normally, I really prefer watching shows after the season has concluded, so I can take it in larger chunks, and at my own pace. But the compensation for having to follow a show in the week-by-week format is that your perception gets to evolve with everyone else's as you go along. I remember having a lot of fun viewing Haruhi while it was originally airing in its strange broadcast order and discussing what might be going on with others who were watching the show. Something about the nature of that communal watching has a strange appeal.

Also...Jake was -twelve- when FFX-2 came out? I mean...damn. That makes me feel old even when I'm not. But it's okay, Jake; we can all pitch in and buy you a razor on your next birthday. Can't let that fuzz sit on your chin, mah man.

@Ittoujuu: I know- I was already becoming disillusioned with Final Fantasy before FFX-2 even came out. I shouldn't care, but the fact that some people I talk to a lot lately are too young to have played the original PSX FFs when they came out blows my mind.

Also, about the community dialogue thing- it's interesting that shows can have a completely different value as a part of that discussion than they do as stand-alone pieces of entertainment. Chu-Bra!! in particular is on two completely different levels in that regard.

@Ivan M: I think I have a good idea what he was referring to, I was more surprised by how direct the comment was. I agree with you that it's a discussion not really suited to this venue, so that's why I didn't make any attempt to go into it.

Comment about the Loli Bill being considered in the Diet. While I am very anti-censorship...living in Japan I have experience with some of the manga and anime that is distributed here and completely understand why this bill is being campaigned.

I think its a little heavy handed but if you saw what I have to deal with daily on the trains, you might want to have some sort of law limiting underage exposure: this morning I had to sit next to an old suit reading a manga where a girl was being raped (and she was clearly prepubescent) and the dude was blatantly looking up from the book and checking out the school girls in our car. He was making a point of his ogling rather than being discrete about it. There was little doubt he was saying "Hey, check me out! I'm reading this dirty manga and I'm looking over your bodies, yo! Tentacle rape fantasies, ftw!" (OK, maybe he isn't so urban...)

Side note: when J dudes get to a certain age, they tend to act out. They start looking for attention, even negative attention. Getting busted by train cops is a huge turn on for some old guys, fyi.
