Japanator: how do you watch anime?

Japanator: how do you watch anime? photo

When you step back and look at the situation, we're all fans of a form of video entertainment that comes solely from a little island country half a world away. It's kind of weird when you think about it that way, isn't it? And because this form of entertainment is limited in availability to everyone except those in that island country, we fans have to watch it in whatever way possible.

The many devoted followers of anime have varied ways of watching it, whether it be on a portable media player, a web browser, or even on their television via a DVD. Chatting with fellow fans recently, I realized that we all enjoyed anime in completely different forms. This made me wonder how you enjoy anime, dear Japanator reader.

What do you watch? What media does it play from? What do you view it on? How often do you watch it?

Do you download anime watch it on your PC? Do you stream it from a video site and watch it in a browser? Do you wait for DVD releases and watch them on your television? Do you mix it up?

I'll go first, after the jump. Please follow my lead.

Diet: 80% fansub, 20% DVD. I watch mostly new shows as they're airing in Japan. I've come down from 5-6 new shows a season to about 3 now. Gotta make room for the J-dramas, you know. On top of that, I watch 1-2 shows on DVD a season. I just watched Gurren Lagann again on DVD. It's just as good the 2nd time!

Media/devices: For the fansubs, they play on a Windows Media PC purchased exclusively for anime and the like. It sits in my living room, connected to my entertainment center.  It's a Core 2 Duo machine with about a terabyte of storage, connected to my 60" HDTV via a HDMI cable and a optical output to a Dolby Digital receiver. This way, I can watch and navigate through shows via a remote control, watching the higher resolution "Hi-Vision" broadcast subs in all their glory.

As for the DVDs, I only purchase the shows I absolutely adore. I had to learn the hard way about just buying everything: finding yourself broke with a bookshelf of crap anime isn't cool.

Frequency: I still try to watch at least one episode a day. I do one or two in the day, and maybe another at night.  It's a sickness.

What about you? Your turn now!
