May’n is an artist that certainly stands out from all the rest. There is no doubt that if you have ever heard her sing, be it in anime or radio, you will know it is her without any hesitation. With her unique and stylized vocals, May’n has started etching her place in the music world. Whether its R&B, soul, hip-hop, dance, or rock, there is nothing that she can’t adapt to.
One thing that did bring me loads of joy was having the opportunity to have an interview with the lovely rock goddess. Getting to know more about what makes her who she is, her influences, and her passions. So come with me after the break to explore one of Japan's hottest rising stars!
JT: Like many of our readers, I was introduced to you as Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier. Did you have any difficulties separating yourself from the Sheryl Nome character, in style and voice?
May'n: In concert, I always connect to each character's heart when I sing their songs. Some are weak, strong, sexy, cute... I'm lucky to be attached to so many characters, because I want everyone to see many kinds of "May'n." But it's true that I think of Sheryl when I sing her songs. Especially the song "Obelisk" -- it was used for the big battle scene, so the orange glow sticks that my fans use look like torches to me.
JT: On this latest album "HEAT", there was more of a rock influence in most of the tracks. Is this where your current style is heading, or was this more about exploring what you can do with your style?
May'n: I personally think my singing style fits rock the best, so I would love to sing more rock songs in the future. Of course I'll add some dance music, soul, or R&B flavor, too, so it will be May'n-style rock music. We created this latest album thinking of everyone at the concerts. All the "Heat" that I received from my fans, and the "Heat" that I want to create with the whole audience... The reason why many of my new songs have more of a rock taste is because everyone's feedback is always so passionate -- and that's "rock," right?
JT: Who, in the entire music world, would you like to do a collaboration with? Is there a singer or composer?
May'n: There are many artists that I would love to work with -- it's too many to name them all. But one of my dreams already came true in the process of recording my new album "HEAT"! I got to work with Daisuke Asakura, who is such a great musician. I've admired him for a long time, but I never expected that would I get a chance to work with him so closely. I was really amazed.
JT: I know you have such a busy schedule with your work. What do you like to do in your free time to wind down and relax?
May'n: During my days off, I often go shopping, see movies, or hang out with my friends. Usually my days off are scattered, so I get to do only one little thing for myself. But when I get a long stretch of free time, I like to go on trips by myself!
JT: Everyone on Japanator knows that I love to cook Japanese food. What I am wondering is, what are some of your favorite dishes and snacks?
May'n: Taiyaki (fish-shaped cakes filled with red bean paste)! Takoyaki (octopus dumplings)! Sushi! Food from my home city Nagoya such as miso cutlet or chicken wings!
JT: Do you have any message for your adoring American fans?
May'n: I went to California for the first time to perform at Anime Expo two years ago and I'm so happy that I'm coming back here for my solo tour! No matter whether it's in Japan or America, I'm bringing my 100% energy, my 100% performance, and I want my fans in America to feel the same power and excitement from our live shows in Japan. Through this ROCK YOUR BEATS world tour, I want to show everyone that music can bring the world together. So my message is: California! Please show me your hottest "Beat"! Thank you!
I want to thank May’n again for taking time out of her busy schedule to ask my questions. It’s been a pleasure and I hope that everyone can get out there to see her ROCK YOUR BEATS World Tour. You can see May'n perform live in Los Angeles on June 21 and San Francisco on June 23; head here for more information about tickets. Let’s show her how we ROCK YOUR BEATS!
I will leave you with a little May’n goodness for you all. I’ll be back in the kitchen perfecting taiyaki and takoyaki as soon as I possibly can.
