Japanator Recommends: Chi's Sweet Home

I am the biggest Chi fangirl you are ever going to meet.

That being said, I never expected to see this series make its way to the United States. It's so deeply Japanese, especially in its portrayal of home life -- and yet it's Chi's entertaining personality that makes it so easily accessible, no matter what language you read it in.

Suffice to say that I was thrilled to see that Vertical had licensed Konami Kanata's charming tale about a little lost kitten and the family she finds, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. Hit the jump to read our take on this pleasing little title (and why it's well worth your dollars, even if you already own it in Japanese).

Chi's Sweet Home
Creator: Konami Kanata
Publisher: Vertical
Released: June 2010

Most manga you buy these days is black and white. I hate to admit it, but it's something I have secretly never liked about manga. I know that's how it is and how it's always been, but I like color. I just do. So to open my brand new edition of Chi's Sweet Home and find brightly colored pages just really pleased me. Plus, everything about Chi's world is so vivid, the color just gives it that extra pop. It made me want to show the book to all my friends who read manga, which I consider high praise.

Even the back cover is precious.  Of course, it doesn't vary from the Japanese cover -- everything is identical except for the language. And I like that, because I think the cover is perfect for the story inside. Elegant and simplistic, just like the story of Chi and her loved ones.

I don't want to ruin the story, but chapter one tells of the very beginning, where Chi gets separated from her mother and siblings and stumbles into the arms of her new human family. My favorite thing about this manga is Chi's expressions, which keep you laughing aloud as you read her adventures.

See what I mean?

This is a must buy for fans of the series, but if you are unfamiliar with it and a lover of all things cute or stories about cats, you certainly won't regret picking this one up. You can snap it up here at Amazon for about $11, although I have to warn you, once you start, you may find yourself unable to stop reading her adventures. You get addicted to this strong of a dose of pure cuteness very quickly!
