Ever wondered what Captain Harlock would look like on acid?

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem is a musical film collaboration between the French house artists Daft Punk and Toei Studios. On the surface, it appears to be a fairly generic sci-fi adventure anime. It has a group of intrepid heroes, a dastardly villian, an adventurous journey and a fight against evil. What's unusual about Interstella is the presentation. Instead of dialogue, it uses music from Daft Punk's Discovery album, making it essentially an hour-long music video with pulsing psychadelic visuals. It is, without a doubt, one of the most unique and visually arresting anime I have ever seen.

Find out more after the break.

The story of Interstella is fairly straightforward, even cliche. A blue-skinned alien band consisting of four generic members (the spiky-haired hero, the elegant heroine, the buff black guy and the chubby midget) are kidnapped by an evil record company mogul (named Darkwood) from Earth. They are brainwashed and disguised as human band called the Crescendolls, and forced to play endless concerts and sign thousands of autographs. After being freed by an intergalactic adventurer who flies a guitar-shaped starship, they find themselves on the run from Darkwood's minions and Earth's authorities. Eventually, they discover Darkwood's plans for universal domination, and journey to his sinister castle to stop him once and for all.

Of course, this is merely an excuse plot, designed to set the stage for catchy tunes and colorful visuals. Every scene of Interstella is filled with exotic scenery, bright neon lights and kaleidoscopic colors, all of which throb in time to the soundtrack. This film has no dialogue or narration, merely Daft Punk music. Provided you enjoy electronica, this soundtrack is very catchy and usually complements the story and visuals nicely. There are, however, a few instances when the upbeat tempo of the music feels horribly inappropriate, such as the more serious scenes involving heartbreak and death. Aside from these jarring moments, it all flows quite nicely and creates an exhilarating sensory experience.

Many have likened Interstella to an acid trip, a metaphor I find wholly appropriate. It's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy electronic dance music or techno. However, if you dislike such music, you will find this movie to be boring and annoyingly repetitive, especially given its lack of any meaningful plot. If you need a litmus test, watch the video for Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger on YouTube. If you like what you hear, then Interstella 5555 is worth a look.

MOAR review:

Legacy Comments

I remember seeing Interstella 5555 a while ago, and just thinking, "how come Daft Punk doesn't get to appear in MORE anime?" But really, loved it because it combined my fandom of anime and my fandom of Daft Punk. They are truly the greatest French robot musicians who ever lived.
Interstella was cool,it its day, about 7-8 years ago, back in the days of Wamdue Project's "King of my castel". Sure, the story is cliche and what not, but back then , to an audience seeing Sailor Moon for the 4th time, it was awesome. And how much of a story can you pack into such a medium? It's not like it was always aired in the intended order, so an accessible story line was the way to go.
I constantly scanned MTV to see the next episode. Maybe it due to that fact that I find Daft Punk to be easy on the ear, even if you're not into the genre.
Dunno how many french otakus are lurking around here, but, I think projects like this one were part of bringing anime into the french & european mainstream culture. So thanks Daft Punk and I will always enjoy seeing these music videos.
I really enjoy listening to Daft Punk, so I loved this anime. It is very much like an acid trip, though, but in a good way. It's nice to have some visuals when listening to an album.
If I-5555 has a generic plot that we've seen before, I'll eat my shoe. No, seriously.
I remember watching this a long time ago, and I really enjoyed it.
Weirdest anime movie I've ever seen. Not that that's a bad thing.
DAAAAFTT PUUUUUNK!!!!!
Raising awareness of Interstella 5555 is never a bad thing.
I definately wouldn't compare I-5555 to an acid trip, not even close...
There are plenty of animated cartoons that come much closer to it, even within the niche subgenre of "animated albums" (Watching Yellow Submarine while under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs is an amazing experience)

It's an amazing anime, but without the music it would be absolutely nothing. If you do not like Daft Punk, there's nothing to see here. Having said all that, I do love Daft Punk, and Discovery is my favorite Daft Punk album by a long shot. Hence, I-5555 is totally awesome for me and I re-watch it almost every year.
I find it hard for people to not like this. I myself don't like techno at all, but Daft Punk's music is nice to the ears. Story wise it's not original but it's told nicely and in an unusual way, at least for anime. It does the job in keeping you interested, and that's the most important thing with stories now, not originality but how you tell it.
Acid Trip = Mind Game and Cat Soup (which me and my housemates watched on the same night, as it happens. That was...interesting...)

Interstella 5555 is still awesome, though. :D
Now watch this drinking Red Bull and black coffee at 3am trying to get art projects finished.
They played this at Kumoricon, needless to say; a lot of people did not know what the hell was going on, lol.
Oh hell yes, Haven't seen this in ages. Time for a rewatch!
MAN I LOVED THIS MOVIE! Been such a long time since I watched it. Had I not spent £100 at the anime expo I was at all day today I would order it. Sadly, I'll have to wait till tomorrow.
By the way, my friend did an interstella cosplay that turned out awesome. I know she has pics somewhere...
It's like The Wall only for Daft Punk. All around very awesome, and the full thing is even on Youtube.
Fuckin right, this movie is the shit!
I love this movie. I hope it comes to bluray!
Great movie, great album. Watched it more times than I can count. Need to pick it up on DVD.
I (PROUDLY) own this movie 5 years ago!
Leiji Matsumoto + Daft Punk = A MASTERPIECE!!
One more vote for how awesome Interstella is!!!

Buy it.

Now.
Daft Punk is my fav. band! I cant wait to hear the soundtrack of TRON 2 there working on!
Damn, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

And no, "Avatar" doesn't count.
i loved this. this was the first time i ever saw interstella 5555 unlike many above me. and like some have posted i dont remember seen this somewhere else.
Fantastic movie. Watch it sober, watch it messed up, just make sure you watch it. Daft Punk's album Discovery is already a tour de force when it comes to music, but marrying it to great visuals makes it even better.
I own this movie... this is super awesome
This was one good feature length MTV... hehehe..

Also the visuals pays homage to the romance saga prevalent in Mecha anime when I was young is a real treat!

I always thought that Kayne West saw this film and maybe Akira so he sought after Daft Punk for that collaboration that alluded to Akira in its music video.
Big fan of Daft Punk here. When I first saw one of the videos (I think this was off of their album Discovery), I said to myself, "That looks like Leiji Matsumoto's character designs." Turned out they were. If you don't know Leiji Matsumoto you just haven't been around long enough.

Anyway, it's great. It tells its story without any dialogue and without sound effects, purely with the music and visual storytelling. In some ways it is like an old silent film that just had a musical accompaniment.

It doesn't have to be the best thing ever, it is still cool.
I can't stop watching 5555. I know every moment and every measure by heart, and it still feels amazing every single time.
Lol @mihochan9, that's exactly how I first watched it several years ago. Ironically, I just bought it on DVD last week. It still gets the job done for all-nighters of any sort.
