Japanator Recommends: Mix Speaker's Inc. - Monsters Junk in My Pocket

12:00 PM on 07.19.2009

When it comes to vis-kei (that is visual chaos) bands, there are two camps. First there's the side that doesn't really care so much for the visual end, maybe dressing in lots of black plastic shirts, maybe wearing one of those tiny top hats, maybe making the bass player wear a dress, maybe an eye-patch here and there. Stuff like that. Nothing too extreme. These sorts of band are complete failures.

Then there are the other bands who go so far overboard on the dressing up that they fall right out of the boat and off the edge of the world. These are the guys who have their own clothing lines, their own stage persona that are color coded, have miles of hair and a usually indistinguishable from various Persona persona.

The latter group is where Mix Speaker's, Inc. fall. In fact they are on the furthest end of the spectrum. Not only to they fit most of the aforementioned criteria, but they each have three different forms. Like some sort of increasingly ridiculous RPG boss, they just keep on changing form, from lowly, Earthly beings to heavenly personifications.

Oh, and the play music.

But enough about that, let's get back to the visuals.

As I mentioned a few words ago, each member has three levels to their particular flavor of visual presentation. First off, there's the "white" vocalist Yuki: Little Angel > White Warlock > Abel Monster. Then there's the "black vocalist Miki: Little Devil> Black Warlock > Cain Monster. Are you starting to see the pattern? Thinkgs get a little more wacky after that. Guitarist Aya, previously of the similarity over the top band Psycho le Cemu, goes from Skeleton Witch > Fire Kyoncie > Eve Phoenix. Second guitarist Keiji does Digi Vampire > Water Ogre > Adam Dragon. Adam and Eve, get it? Then there's bass player Seek, also a former member of Psycho le Cemu. He was the zaniest looking member of Psycho, and he really outdoes himself in MSI. As if Big Franken wasn't goofy enough, he also does Wood Zombie and the absolutely awesome God Turtle. Drummer S plays the pet role, suiting up as Moon Wolf > Wind Mummy > Pet Tiger. The latter has three heads.

Also, their music is alright, I suppose.

As you can see, there's a lot to see with Mix Speaker's, Inc. I highly recommend you check out their album Monsters - Junk Story in My Pocket. While it contains some sort of music CD, it much more importantly also comes with a DVD featuring a couple videos of the band. They are hilarious. Absolutely worth the price. The album goes on sale at Maru Music on July 20th. Get it!

They remind me of Vandals from Beet the Vandal Buster. Crazy-looking humanoid monsters that sit around sipping fine wine from crystal glasses in gothic mansions.
Not to be nit picky...but 'Visual Kei' does not mean 'Visual Chaos'. 'Kei' means 'Style'. I recommend you watch their old 'Monster Wars ~Grand Finale~' dvd. And shut your eyes about halfway through and just listen. Don't be so absorbed by the costumes that you ignore the music.
Mizuki is right.

There is something about VK bands that just doesn't click with me. I remember seeing Dir en Grey back in my student days...It's not so much the music (which seems fine with me) nor was it the 'exotic' costumes, but the extravagant behavior on-stage that is just too weird to me.
Don't get me wrong; if Kyo (lead singer) wants to feel his bassist up and give him a little snog, that's fine with me, but off stage he just seemed like the everyday semi-rebellious kid I used to hang out with in the Shinjuku Loft lol.
No offense, Dir en Grey fans, but that is just the way it is. It is mostly an act, while attempting to express themselves in the most unheard and/or unseen way they can possibly think of, which to me just seems over excessive because I genuinely liked Dir en Grey musically...
I'm late but holy crap! Aya went back to VK?!
I picked the game up today, and the TvC stick came yesterday from FedEx.
This game honestly goes above and beyond, Capcom put a lot of heart into it. Between the extremely functional online, great controls, fantastic cast of characters, and adding some fan favorite new ones. There isn't much more you can ask for from a fighting game.
It is a big relief the online works well, I haven't experienced too much lag, and most matched are lag free.
What the game is missing is a good Trial mode like in SFIV and the static anime images at the end aren't Capcom art, I mean Udon does a better-than-decent job at the art, but I wish they somehow got the Tatsunoko animations at the end. The online mode could benefit from a lobby feature and voice chat (which is partially the Wii's fault). My biggest gripe is the final boss, it is just so damn stupid and not fun to fight. I know that they are suppose to be tough, even cheap, but Yami just pisses me off (more than Seth maybe).
You know, before I got meself a 360, I really wanted to play this game, but when I got it for the PC, I was shocked because it was exactly like the 360 version. For real, it's basically the same fucking game . To me, the reviewer simply gave it a 9/10 because it was a fun game to play, especially to him. It reminded him of earlier enjoyments from when he was playing what he considered the best Mario game and reminded him of the reasons why that game was considered the best. Recognizing that these reasons were fully present in the new game, its really a good game. Or at least, that is just what I'm getting at.
Also, as a closing comment to all the 360 and PS3 fans who are complaining about score, u mad. (im not saying all of you, just those guys who find it incomprehensible that a system like the Wii could hold such an awesome game).
