Japanator Recommends: Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge

A lot of new drama came out this season, and before I even read the offerings, I knew what I was in the mood for: something so silly that it bordered on ridiculous. Dopey, even. When I heard that The Wallflower was getting a live action adaption called Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge (Perfect Girl Evolution), I made a beeline for the official website, waiting patiently for the first episode to air.

I'd like to begin here by pointing out one of the cardinal rules of enjoying dorama: it's ridiculously silly, just like anime, only it's real people acting out the silly things instead of animations doing so. I've heard people condemn it as cheesy, and it often can be, but I have to point out the obvious hypocrisy here: YOU'RE ALL OKAY WITH IT WHEN IT'S ANIME. Now get off your high horse and come watch some guilty pleasure j-drama with me!

Did I mention that this show is cheesy? Well, when it opens up and within the first few minutes, you find yourself being introduced to the "Legendary Handsome Four", you can't help but feel you're being sold the poor man's version of the F4 from drama classic Hana Yori Dango. The plot is, these four live in some huge mansion that's being run by a ten year old, and in order to be allowed to stay there, they have to take this random girl in and transform her into some kind of princess.

Why am I still watching? Well, cause that's a classic dorama formula for magic. The more insane the plotline sounds, the better. It's not long before you meet the main female character, Sunako, who is this typical Ringu-like chick who shows up looking like she walked out of an Edgar Allen Poe poem. She's obsessed with stuff like skulls and plastic models of the human body with the guts showing, but of course none of that will matter later in the show once everyone falls in love with her. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though!

I'd like to take a quick moment to mention that the opening if this show is possibly one of the most homosexual intros of all time. All four guys walk out in white suits and proceed to do this dance around Sunako while she's wearing a black cape. And then they all do this ... finger waving thing where sparkles fly from their hands. Seriously. If you don't see this intro and realize what you're in for, then God help you.

Anyway, as you can imagine, this is one of those shows that's aiming to pull high ratings by putting a crew of ikemen in the leading roles. KAT-TUN's Kamenashi Kazuya is obviously intended to be the lead, with NewS' Tegoshi Yuya in second place using his teddy bear good looks to make viewers melt. They're cute guys, but not the world's best actors, although Kamenashi seems to be doing some of his better work in this one.

Why, then, would I recommend Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge, even if sounds like the B-movie version of a better drama? Well, because there's something great about propping your feet up and watching them. They're a guilty pleasure, and so is this show. Plus, I have a feeling it could warm up and get even better as it progresses. Besides, I've already read The Wallflower so I know where the story is going, and I'm curious to see where they're going to take it.We'll have to keep an eye on it and see how it holds up!
