Japanator's Spring '10 preview, part 1 photo

That's right, the Spring 2010 season is almost upon us! So in order to keep you abreast of what the hit shows are likely to be this season, we'll be detailing each of the shows airing for the next three months throughout this week. From the looks of things, there are going to be quite a few good ones in the crowd.

For today's batch, we'll be looking at the following shows: Angel Beats!, Arakawa Under the Bridge, B Gata H Kei, Big Windup season 2 and the Black Rock Shooter OVA. It's a rarity for us to include an OVA, but it's created enough of a storm here in the office that it's worth mentioning.

So follow us after the jump to see which shows you're interested in, and see who'll be covering them.

Angel Beats
Studio: P.A. Works (True Tears, Canaan)
Director: Seiji Kishi (My Bride is a Mermaid, Ragnarok the Animation)
Air Date: April 3, 2010

Written by Jun Maeda of the visual novel company Key, about a boy who's been enrolled in an "afterlife school," where he must attend with other recently dead in order to move on to Heaven. While the kids aren't covered with their deathly injuries, they still feel pain from their time on earth.

Think this is going to be one of those sad, sappy visual novel-type shows? Well, you're wrong. There's a group of students, organized as the SSS, who are leading a war against God for what he's done to them. With guns.

Expect Jon Snyder to be covering this, in case you couldn't have guessed.

Arakawa Under the Bridge
Studio: SHAFT (Hidamari Sketch, Bakemonogatari)
Director: Akiyuki Shinbo (Dance in the Vampire Bund, Bakemonogatari)
Air Date: April 4, 2010

Originally a gag manga, Arakawa Under the Bridge is about a young guy who believes in never having debts. If someone helps you out, you pay them back. So, in a twist of fate, his life is saved by a strange girl who believes she's a Martian and lives under the bridge of the Arakawa river.

What is he to do?

He starts living there with her, of course. Should be interesting to see where this gets taken, especially by the creative minds over at SHAFT.

Expect Ben Huber to be covering this.

B Gata H Kei
Studio: HAL Film Maker (Aria the Animation, Princess Tutu)
Director: Yusuke Yamamoto (Welcome to the NHK, Sakura Taisen: Le Nouveau Paris)
Air Date: April 1, 2010

This high school girl is looking to have 100 casual sex partners. I don't really need to say anything more, because I know I've sold about 75% of our readership.

Fine, I'll continue. Yes, our heroine is a virgin, and so has some slightly unrealistic expectations. But she soon finds herself pursuing just one boy, because he's oh-so-dreamy or something like that. I'm expect this to consist mainly of fanservice and win.

Expect Pedro Cortes to be covering this.

Big Windup Season 2
Studio: A-1 Pictures (Kannagi, Big Windup)
Director: Tsutomu Mizushima (The Legend of Koizumi, Genshiken OVA)
Air Date: April 2, 2010

Picking up where the first season left off, we'll be watching the boys of Big Windup! aim for the stars and try to capture the championship flag. Sadly, the show won't be coming over to Western shores due to poor interests from fans at home, but the show is well worth taking a look at.

Expect Brad Rice to be covering this.

Black Rock Shooter OVA
Studio: Ordet
Director: Shinobu Yoshioka

It's a character from Supercell and a figure. I'm not really sure where things are going to go with this property, but it's got everyone hot and bothered about it.

Expect either Colette or Jake to be covering this. The cage match fight will determine it all.

Legacy Comments

Of note is that the Arakawa manga was done by Nakamura Hikaru, the same person who does Saint Oniisan -- you know, the manga with Jesus and Buddha as roomies? Aww yeah.
I will be on Angel Beats like, I dunno, but it sounds awesome. Likewise for Arakawa Under The Bridge.
I'm all aboard the SHAFT anime like big girls at a buffet (They made me watch Vampire Bund and didn't even stay to cuddle).

I do have my bad feelings about Angel Beats though: Either it's going to be mindblowingly greattastic, or it's gonna be assblowingly tropetastic.
I'll watch Angel Beats to see where it goes, but it's a definite "drop first" candidate.

Arakawa definitely will get the full season watch from me. That is, if SHAFT gives us a whole season...

And the Fanservice show is debuting on April 1st. Har dee har har.
I'll be checking out Arakawa Under the Bridge and Black Rock Shooter for sure.
No love for Big Windup? You guys suck :(
Hmm, I guess B Gata H Kei since that might actually be funny.
awesome! Big Windup season 2! I really enjoyed watching the first season back when it was just fansubs. I remember it being called Big Swing. It got me interested in sports anime. definitely my must watch show of the season. everything else, meh who cares. Ive got LotGH to watch.
Hmm, Angel Beats sounds interesting, I'll be at least giving it a shot. I do agree with @SourGr8pes that it looks like it will be either great or terrible. Personally I worry they might go for too much "wacky" rather than taking plot points with potential in an interesting way. School after you die to me sounds like Haibane Renmei + Clannad. The armed resistance aspect I'mnot really sure how it meshes with that, especially with a Key member writer.
B Gata H Kei might have the most epic premise ever. If Yusuke Yamamoto can even tap half the brilliance he had with Welcome to the NHK, this could be one of the funniest shows of this year.

I'll be watching Arakawa too. Created by the author of Saint Young Men and Produced by SHAFT?

Yes please.
I'm definitely interested in Angel Beats. Might get on Big Windup too but I need to watch Season 1 first.
Angel Beats and Arakawa look good. I'm going to be all over Black Rock Shooter, for sure.
@Brad Rice

Don't worry Brad, my excitement for Big Windup season 2 is so great, it'll make up for everyone else's lukewarm reaction.

But seriously, there is nothing I'm looking forward to this season more than Big Windup's second season. The first season was hands down one of the best sports anime I had ever watched in my life (it's a constant tie between it and Hajime no Ippo). It had that perfect combination of real-life highschool struggles and awesome passionate sports action.

But Arakawa and Black Rock Shooter look surprisingly interesting so I'll check those two out as well.
Huh. I just listened into the Black Rock Shooter song. It's the only Vocaloid song I've ever listened to besides MELT, and... it's getting weirdly addicting.
Putting the OVA on my list for sure.
Looks like I'll be checking out Angel Beats then. Jun Maeda = Sold.
.... Black Rock Shooter hasn't shown any plot whatsoever. Really now people, the only reason most of you even know about this is because of the song that has no plot. If its already got so many people interested, I'm surprised they didn't just get a whole 26 episode lineup. Only angel beats looks good, and maybe Arakara under the bridge
People are interested in BRS because:
a) It's Black Rock Shooter
b) It's by Yamakan (or at least his studio)

That just equals AWESOME

Also, Angel Beats FTW

I just hope all the shows I'm interested in will going to be covered...
I'll probably be checking out all of these except for Big Windup.

Angel Beats just sounds so badass for being so moe
Arakawa sounds interesting, and maybe I'll check out Angel Beats. But Black Rock Shooter takes priority over all of them. I've been sold since I saw the Pilot Version last year.
After looking at the chart I've got about 5 shows lined up. Uh its gonna be an expensive spring.
Arakawa looks good. I'm fearing Angel Beat may be a Haruhi ripoff, but it looks okay I suppose. It's too early to judge. That B Gata H Kei one... Is that premise for real? I am NOT going to be hitting that one. Noooo way.
I'll be looking at Arakawa and Angel Beats. I'll drop Angel Beats in a heartbeat if it looks like it'll be as vacuous and poorly written as Canaan.
I guess it's Arakawa Bridge and Black Rock Shooter to look forward to. A series made by the True Tears people.... I don't know, but then again if you wanted a series you only need to watch for 5 mins, there you go.
I don't really get what the interest is with B Gata H Kei. A girl who wants 100 casual sex partners but finds herself falling for one guy? That's basically "Starts out with a wacky premise to get viewers to start watching, then becomes a really standard romantic comedy show." A girl falling for one guy is pretty much the premise of most romance shows.

That said, there's an unusually large number of series this coming season that I want to give at least an initial watch, at least to see the first 1-2 episodes and what that'll deliver. Here's hoping to pull some good shows out of the mix.
@ittoujuu: I would bet money that you're right about B Gata H Kei, but I have to admit that I'm curious to see where it goes- at least for the first few episodes.
B Gata H Kei = Chu-bra 2: The High School Years
Whales in the sky? I'm in and intrigued by Arakawa. Hoping the main female is more than a quirky idealised heroine.

And Black Rock shooter, why not? Lovely fight choreography and art direction please.
...Haruhi? Is that you in Angel Beat? No I must be mistaken. You would be in the SOS brigade!

"organized as the SSS"...pure coincidence I tell you!

:P
Angel Beats and Rainbow.
Fuck SHAFT.
"This high school girl is looking to have 100 casual sex partners. I don't really need to say anything more, because I know I've sold about 75% of our readership."

Face meets palm.
Arakawa Under the Bridge and Black Rock Shooter ftw! May check out Angel Beats to see the Limbo dwellers rage against God (lol, try if you must).
I know someone's said this before, but...
Bennett better wear a luchador mask to the fight and someone better tape it.
