Japanator's Spring '10 preview, part 4 photo

And here we are, at the end of our Spring 2010 preview. It's been a long and tiring road, with quite a few shows that I'm sure you're looking forward to. And many more that you probably are never going to watch. Like K-ON!!, even though we'll be talking about it non-stop here.

I'll just apologize in advance.

So, with this final batch, the shortlist looks like this: SD Gundam Sangokushi, Senko no Night Raid, Betrayal Knows My Name, Working!! and Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei.

Take a look at part 1, part 2 and part 3 to see if there's anything you missed, and enjoy the show!

SD Gundam Sangokushi
Studio: Sunrise (Every Gundam ever)
Director: Kenichi Suzuki (Gundam Evolve)
Air Date:
April 3, 2010

Normally, this item would not be on our list. The show amounts to nothing more than a franchising opportunity with the already popular line of SD Gundam figures. We have standards after all. But it appears Tim Sheehy doesn't, since he readily volunteered to watch this.

The plot is the beaten-to-death story of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but this time all the characters are super-deformed Gundams! Oh joy!

Tim, I hope you enjoy this show, and I expect you to write an Annotated Anime for it every week.

Senko no Night Raid
Studio: A-1 Pictures (Kannagi, Big Windup)
Director: Jun Matsumoto (Persona: Trinity Soul)
Air Date: April 6, 2010

The second series in "The Power of Anime" presentation that's going on (So Ra No Wo To was the first, if that's a warning flag for anyone), this is a series about Japanese spies in China during World War II. The series revolves around a spy organization, and how they were buried in history.

So, Japan is tackling it's wartime history? Oh, this is going to be good. There's no way that they can avoid the field of landmines that is going to be this topic. So, it'll be interesting to see how much the story interacts with the setting it's in, or if they'll just try to breeze over it as much as possible.

Ben Huber will be tackling this one.

Uragiri wa boku no name wo shitte iru (Betrayal Knows My Name)
Studio: J.C. Staff (Hatsukoi Limited, Hayate the Combat Butler)
Director: Katsushi Sakurabi (Tsukihime, Gunparade March)
Air Date: April 12, 2010

Our protagonist here is a boy who can sense peoples' feelings just by touching them. Exciting, isn't it? Well, what can you expect when the kid is found in a bush as a baby. I can't say that the series really sparks any particular interest, but Karen Gellender is all over it.

This is yet another J.C. Staff show, which at this point, I must admit I have my doubts as to the quality of this one. The plot seems a little shaky, with the big mystery being a guy claiming to be the protagonist's older brother suddenly showing up, and the cast doesn't titillate me.

Working!!
Studio: A-1 Pictures (So Ra No Wo To, Valkyria Chronicles)
Director: Yoshimasa Hiraike (Solty Rei, SaiKano)
Air Date: April 4, 2010

With a preview episode already out, we already have a good idea as to what Working!! will be like. Essentially we have a protagonist who is now working part-time at a restaurant filled with a cast of hilarious (not especially) co-workers and their everyday adventures. Think K-ON!, but with food.

Of course, each of the girls working there fall into different moe types, and the protagonist, with his fetish for cute things, is sure to fall in love at some point. Still, it's an enjoyable show for those just looking for a laugh.

Expect Colette Bennett to be tackling this one.

Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei
Studio: Madhouse (Death Note, Black Lagoon)
Director: Masaaki Yuasa (Mind Game, Kaiba)
Air Date: April 22, 2010

One of the oddest tales, this one follows a third-year college student through some rather odd experiences. Coming from the director of Kaiba, I really can't say what we'll be getting from this -- but what we'll be getting will undoubtedly be good.

Sadly, I can't pitch it to you much better, but check out the promo trailer. Until then, wait for Karen Gellender to cover the show.

Legacy Comments

Working! looked promising from the preview episode, katana waitress and all.

Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei could be good; it definitely looks like a show that's trying to break out and try for a unique presentation style. I'll definitely give that a shot too.
Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei is the only one that really piqued my interest. I can't really tell what it's about, not knowing japanese, but it certainly looked different.
I'll be checking out Senko no Night Raid, Uragiri wa boku no name wo shitte iru, and Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei.
I guess I'll have to look at Working!!

It seems like the kind of show that could become famous.
Where's this week's Annotated Anime? ;_;
Ah well, the only thing here that really interests me is Senko no Night Raid.
I dunno about this season, man...

I'm skeptical.

I'm going to have to implement some metaphorical litmus strips on a lot of these shows.
Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei seems to be the most intriguing most also appears to be the one with the most risk involved. On one hand the art is unique enough to really stand out from the crowd, but will the story be able to interact with the art style to create something truly unique?

This is going to be a serious hit-or-miss.
"I'm a dumbass!" Alert above, watch out for sloppy grammar ;)
Probably something like this:

i'm looking forward to sd gundam for epic fights as in flashy colourful special effects that will increase my heart rate. if it tries to be all serious filled with dialogue i'll drop it in a heartbeat.
night raid looks to be a deep political show. or at least i hope it to be. definitely gonna try the first ep.
judging from ep 1, working is a good slice-of-life series. i'll probably watch each episode but could never gather the patience to re-watch any of them.
yojo-han, reminds me of zetsubou sensei. definitely a must-try for me.
Loved SNW. Very much anticipating Senkou for what looks like yummy visuals, attractive characters, and an intriguing plot. Japanese spies in China. Gee, the history there oughta be interesting at any rate. I can already spoil it for you.
The mission: Unit 731
Buried in History: By the United States

Yeah. It's gonna be good~
I'm really interested in the plot of Senkou no Night Raid. Anybody with a rudimentary understanding of Japan's history knows how this might be a touchy subject. But I'm honestly curious and kind of hopeful. Is this a real attempt at owning up to their checkered past and showing the atrocities that occured in China (like Unit 731)? Or are they just going to gloss over the "controversial" parts? Or even worse, are they going to portray China as the bad guys trying to interfere with the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere"?

I curiously await the results of a title like Senkou. I'm probably going to end up disappointed (and extremely pissed off) but it can't hurt to hope right?
working and night raid getting a watch from me. working already has a full preview episode out there.
Senko no Night Raid and Yojo-han are two I'm really looking forward to. Secret government spies and espionage based in 1920s Shanghai? Sign me up. College meandering with a weird art style and strange-looking characters? Indeed! I'm glad that I feel I can have a reasonably full plate this season without having to pick up a series just to fill space.
night raid might be good....and maybe Yojo-han. Working was actually pretty funny and relaxing so I'm probably gonna keep on that one. So that's like 5 shows this whole season so far....still lower than normal >.
Dug the Working preview, so I'm definitely down for that. Will check out Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei too. That's it from this list.
Ah yeah, Senkou is due at last. With japanese spies, it'll be interesting to see how it turns out. I'm betting it'll all be positive and cloud over all the controversial stuff, or not mention it at all. (remember kids, japan was more a war instigating victimiser than war victim)

Like the clips so far, and Senkou could be this seasons must see show. Yojo and Working, I may check out too.
Hold up, isn't the Ironman anime series due in April too? Please check.
Night raid for me, I might check out Uragiri, but I'll wait to see the reviews for the first few episodes.
I'll check out Night Raid and maybe Working if the moe doesn't kill me
@GekigaViking

No, it's been delayed until Fall. Same with Wolverine, which was intended for the summer season.
I've been following the Uragiri manga, but it's either slow coming out, or slow to develop plot. Also, it looks like a yaoi but probably isn't? I'd think about giving it a try, but it looks like one that will need 100 eps to play through, and I've never had that kind of series-watching stamina (and they'll probably do it in 13 eps and it won't mean anything).
I do so hope that Night Raid doesn't gloss over the things Japan did in the war, but instead actually deals with them. If it does, we could be looking at one of the great anime series. Maybe.
Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei, You have just made the list.

Also: Night Raid's the show I'm looking forward to the most this season. Beyond that, I think i'm good.
After the horrible batch 3, I'm glad all of the boobfest-shows were left there. This one looks waaay better.

I don't know what Yojo-han Shinwa Taikei is about, but looking at the previous works of the director and Madhouse, it's no brainer it will be one of the best shows this season.
yojo-han had me at madhouse/mind game director. I don't care what the plots about...I have to see at least one episode.
You know, I would probably be psyched for Night Raid if I didn't know that it was coming from the So Ra No Wo To people.
@Karen: As far as I know, it's just connected by the "Power of Anime" block. I don't think it has any staff members in common, or studio involvement, so I think it's possible for it to escape Sora no Woto's fate. I'm not sure what the running thread between the "Power of Anime" shows is, but so far, the only thing I can see is that they're both shows that involve war. Maybe it's like a looser conglomeration in the spirit of the Noitamina block?
what the fuck is the term 'power of anime' anyways? why sora no woto first? why the word power only apply to sora no woto? almost every single anime out there involves some form of power from power of love to giant robots.
@OtakuMon

It's a particular timeslot on TV Tokyo, I believe. Something about them cooperating with other studios.
Senko looks interesting, other than that who knows.. the one from Madhouse might be interesting
From this list, I guess Working is the only one I'd exclusively follow and Night Raid seems interesting. We've delved so much into WWII in the States (Japan to an extent as well), it'd be good to see how Japan could actually deal with another war.
