I'm fo' reals here! Japanese company Brother has created what it's calling the AiRScouter, and it really seems revolutionary. But wait, you've never heard of Brother? You probably have. Remember that brief stint of time in the 80s when typewriter companies were trying to convince people that a PC would be useless and was simply an expensive word processor? Yeah. Brother made those trendy electronic typewriters that had various enhanced functions, trying to give computers a run for their money. I may have written an early school paper or two on one--regrettably.

The AiRScouter projects images directly on the retina, tricking the eye into seeing the display from a "transparent sixteen inch screen floating one meter in front of the eyes" with the scenery behind the display also appearing transparent.  Brother is apparently under the impression that this technology will be used in an industrial context, allowing workers to do things like read manuals while working, cutting down on time. But if I know the world, I can totally see this technology being militarized very quickly.

On the other hand, I could also see this sort of technology being added to gaming, which is of course what I'd really like for it to become. Actually, I'm not sure I care what it's used for, it's just so damn cool sounding.

Either way, I want one. Because I really want to run around screaming, "IT'S OVER 9000!!!!"

Hit the jump to see a video about the new AiRScouter!

If they are cheap enough, I will buy a years supply and break one every day.

Also I think those electric typewriters were used at my old school for the dumber ones. Or, for specifics, the 'goddamn-stop-playing-with-your-belt' autistic ones.
I imagine countless people screaming "IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!" when this goes on sale.
Nothing really new. The military is already using similar tech (see Viper HMD).
It will cost at least the yen equivalent of 9001 dollars.
It must.
The fake head's face is scary. I foresee a horror film based on that face alone.
I want.
See also Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations case 2.
I would like to try this out once it becomes internationally available...or maybe i'll just order one sooner (although I can't see it being open to regular consumers for quite a while).

"Apart from industrial applications, this display could be used in A.I. technology, combining the real and virtual worlds"

Dennou Coil, here we come!
Simplesmente genial!
Sweet, potential for augmented reality.
I don't know how I would personally use it for, but I absolutely need one of those.
If it can't read people's power levels before I fight them, then I don't want it
So, it can or it can not read power levels?

And is there a limit of power reading before it explodes? I don't want one of these exploding on my eye if I face something like Freeza.
can it only read humans?

"IT'S OVER 9000 TB!!"
i miss my brother Type Writer.
No one here is probably old enough to remember this, but an American company in Boston came up with that same design for a PC monitor screen back in 1985-86. The idea was that it was the ultimate in screen security as no one could see what you were viewing or doing. The resolution wasn't the greatest, 640x480 and in red-and-white only--definitely not for video or photos, but because the market was businessmen they figured all that mattered was the ability to reproduce text (spreadsheets, word processing, database, programming, etc). Also, at that time, portable computers all sported miniature video tubes (i.e., Portable PC, the original Compaq, Kaypro, and so forth), which they figured would allow their product to reduce computer weight from 28 pounds to 14 pounds (no monitor). Unfortunately, it never caught on. I tried it at a trade show and it was really weird to see words appearing at what looked like about 18" on taop of whatever else I was looking at. The tech said to look at a blank wall or ceiling to remove the distracting elements of people moving behind the words I was reading. Outside, he said, just look at the sky.

As far as the military is concerned, they've been using stuff like this for decades.
So, it could be possible to read energy levels of people and have Denno Coil-like adventures? If they can at least do the later, DO WANT!
hmmm watching porn with out the use of a laptop or iphone? And only you could see it since your wearing them! I HAVE TO GET THIS>
what I find interesting is that (A) the thing actually sorta looks like the DBZ scouter (minus colored lens piece), and (B) they actually used the word "Scouter" as part of the name. Gotta figure that one (or more) of the product designers/engineers/etc. is a DBZ fan...
