Seven films depicting the famous war crime, ‘The Rape of Nanking’ are slated to be released in 2007. And as you might guess, none of these seven films depict the Japanese occupation in a good way. To combat this, Japanese nationalist have plans to produce their own version of the events, tentatively titled “The Truth of Nanking”.
For those who don’t know, The Rape of Nanking was a war crime committed by the Japanese military that took place between December and February, 1937 to 1938 around the Chinese town of Nanking. The death toll is widely debated among many countries, though it is estimated to be between 150,000 and 300,000 Chinese civilians. Rape, arson, and looting were frequently committed by the Imperial Japanese Army.
“What is important is to correct the historical record and send right messages,” says the soon-to-be director Satoru Mizushima. “If we remain silent, anti-Japanese propaganda will spread across the world.”
I think it is important to understand that this film, if made, would be same thing the nationalist are so diligently trying to fight, anti-Japanese propaganda. Who would watch this film and think highly of Japanese Imperialism, what is Mizushima smoking? I think it’s time to fess up Japan, and move on from there.
