Here's a shocker for you: K-ON!! is popular. Way popular. Popular enough to make TBS some real mad bank.
The Tokyo Broadcasting System's latest fiscal report revealed that between April 1st and June 30th, everyone's favorite high school girl band anime sold enough t-shirts, tie-in goods, and other associated character merchandise to clear 1.8 billion yen (about $20 million US dollars).
20 mil doesn't sound like too much in the grand scheme of things, but that's just three months' worth of activity, and doesn't account for DVD and Blu-ray sales, and advertisements played during the actual broadcast. And if the scope is expanded beyond just TBS' coffers, encompassing the doujinshi markets and unlicensed toys and goods, one can barely imagine how much K-ON!! might be worth.
In truth, that's not exactly an earth-shaking fact, unless you live in some kind of alternate universe where Gundam and Evangelion never existed.
Still. That's a sizeable chunk of change for such goods as these hideous clothing articles. Just check out the video below the cut. That's like, half a dozen possible figure licenses, easy.
The real question, however, is which K-ON!! character is selling the most merch? Is it Mio, Yui, Mugi, Ritsu, or Azu-nyan?
