Apparently Toei is creating a new brand known as "Toei Hero Next," which will feature actors from previous tokusatsu series (I am assuming that this only applies to those owned by Toei.) acting out in more mature roles. The first installment to come out of this brand is going to be a sci-fi mystery film known as Piece: Kioku no Kakera. Piece's premise involves a reporter and a photographer that are trying to investigate a series of deaths that are connected to the Megalopolis Gorgon Incidents. What makes these murders interesting is that the victims are killed by getting petrified.
Piece will be directed by Ten Yamashita (SHINOBI), and Kamen Rider W's head writer Riku Sanjo will handle the screenplay for the film. Shu Watanabe (Eiji from Kamen Rider OOO) and Ryosuke Miura (Ankh from Kamen Rider OOO) are going to play the two main characters of the film. Shu is going to play as the reporter in the movie, and Ryosuke is going to play as the photographer. Since the photographer is going to exhibit five different personalities, I think it will suit Ryosuke's role, which might act as a nice take on the Eiji and Ankh's partnership from Kamen Rider OOO.
You can color me interested with this new idea, since I am curious to see which actors are going to return in Toei's new brand. At the moment, we are not sure if it is only going to be only movies, so there is a chance that they might also consider releasing an installment on television.
Piece will come out in Japanese theaters in the fall, which will appear fully assembled. Surprisingly enough, the movie will be available to rent on DVD on November 9 and the DVD will hit retail on November 21st.
