Japan has these manner posters, which ask you kindly: Please do it at home. Each month, they've been promoting a different behavior, and now that it's October, they ask you to kindly save the eating for when you're at home.
As a general rule for Japanese people, it's taboo to eat on the train. The only time I've caught a woman eating on the train, she literally had her head buried inside of her purse so that she could eat a donut. I felt so embarrassed for her, but I guess when you're starving to death, you'll do just about anything.
I'm assuming this poster is aimed mostly at us foreigners who will gladly munch down on their food, or talk loudly on their cellphone, or do just about everything you're not supposed to do while on the train. I've been guilty of eating on the train once or twice, but what can I say? I was hungry, and I only had a few bites left. It's not like I made a mess or anything. But I know not everyone is as neat as me.
So please, do it at home.
