Live action Ashita no Joe coming in 2011! photo

If you're an old manga nerd like me, you may remember a series that came out in the early seventies called Ashita no Joe. It follows the adventures of Joe Yabuki, an orphan who meets his future after running away and bumping into a man named Danpei who will eventually train him to become a boxer. The series was extremely popular, spawning both an anime series and several videogames.

ANN has reported that it will be turned into a live action film, starring one of my own favorite j-boys, Tomahisa Yamashita from NewS, in the starring role. It seems he is undergoing vigorous physical training for the role. I know Japan is going to be really excited about this because of how beloved this series is, but all I can say is that I can only imagine Yamashita is going to have his shirt off for at least half the movie. And that is good freaking news.

I only know about this series because Mashiro referenced it in an early chapter of Bakuman...

But I'll check this out. Looks interesting.
Unless he gets that pompadour, I refuse to think he looks good.
now I know why Yamapi is making himself buffed compared to the other skinny JE bishounen. XD
The question is if they're willing to show his face beaten and battered.
I dunno, if this is the same guy from the Kurosagi dorama, he's going to have a hard time delivering anything besides angry boy-band-guy-pout-face.
@tokyogetter.
You are absolutely right. But well his name alone would generate the needed revenue for the film so they wont really heed Strey's concern.
I made an account here just now, because I'm kind of excited by this. Ashita no Joe is awesome.
I still like TomoPi's slightly over-the-top performance in Nobuta wo Produce. I hope this works out.
So much for my dreams of a live-action Hajime No Ippo. I guess this will do though.
@Gee-Man
I want the same thing man.
Anything Hajime no Ippo would be awesome.

But they would have a hard time casting Takamura.

It is humanly impossible to deliver his greatness.
