Love Plus marriage on CNN!

Love Plus marriage on CNN! photo

Remember that guy who married Nene Anegasaki from Love Plus?

Apparently, he's managed to gain quite a bit of fame as a result of his unusual wedding... so much so that CNN decided to do a report on him. It's nice to see that an ailing cable news channel with rapidly falling ratings still has time to report on quirky stories from Japan that we covered a month ago. Protip for CNN: check Japanator more often!

In all seriousness, I have to compliment Kyung Lah's reporting on this piece. Among most people, this virtual marriage elicits reactions ranging from bewildered bemusement to moral outrage. However, Kyung's report is actually pretty neutral and balanced, even given the controversial subject matter. Bravo!

A video of the report is embedded below the jump. See if you can spot the Bakemonogatari poster in the background!

Where's our localization D:
If I were to marry a character from Love Plus I'd probably spend the rest of my days getting mods to work on it SOMEHOW and releasing the software to the internet to let others add more items, actions and whatever. I mean, the game can't be varied enough to keep their relationship fresh for several years, can it?

On the other hand, the real-life equivalent of modding the game would probably be to drug or hypnotize your girlfriend, which isn't all too desirable in a regular relationship. I'd serously ask this guy how he thinks about all that!

But indeed, the coverage here was not as prejudiced as expected. Thumbs up.
Sad thing is, he looks like a good guy who could pick a girl up.
^I agree. He's not bad looking at all.
Yea , he definitely look promising . I saw Bakemonogatari Senjou~!But Japan sure has a lot of extraordinary things happening ^^
Why the heck you would marry a sequence of electrons inside of a copper, gold, and silicon wafer, I have no idea...

I'm sorry, but even looking at myself in the worst otaku light possible, I have to say this man is still more pathetic. ^ and seriously, with a little work he could've probably been happily married...
Heero, consider for a moment that YOU are nothing more than a sequence of electrons inside a synaptic network made out of carbon molecules. If an entity attains sentience, does it really matter what medium it inhabits?
HOLY SHIT

@1:32, YOU CAN SEE GOTCHA FORCE ON THAT SCREEN. HOLY BALLS, I FUCKING LOVED THAT GAME. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT MADE A CAMEO ON A MAJOR NEWS STATION, OMG.

Oh yeah, and some guy married a vidya game, good for him a guess.
lol we can say that she's cheating on him and he can't prove we didn't
I've seen these reports about Japan from CNN before, and I don't particularly care for them. They always seem very biased and often times judgmental and condescending.

Does weird shit happen in Japan? Of course, but if you are one of the millions of people who don't really know about Japan and only get your information in soundbites like this report, then you would think video game character marriages are becoming a major part of the culture rather than an few isolated incidents.

Also, what the hell was with mentioning Second Life - that is more of a western game than a Japanese one, yet they mention "in game avatar marriages" as if it is an exclusively Japanese cultural item.

Kyung Lah did a better job reporting this than a some of the reports I've seen CNN put out regarding Japan, but I still think it has a long way to go from being "neutral and balanced"
This is the first time I have seen and heard Sal9000. He does seem to be a pretty reasonable man, who sometimes understandably doesn't want real companionship.

Of course, results may vary.
@ Jon: But Nene isn't sentient, is she? We're not quite there yet with the AI.

This Attack on Titan mock film poster is pretty sweet

I have very little faith in the Japanese film industry's ability to make a decent live action adaptation of Attack on Titan. Very few studios here could supply the budget required to make it work. This is especially the case ...
