Think on this. The single for Suzumiya Haruhi's "Hare Hare Yukai," possibly the most popular anime song of all time, only hit #5 on Japan's Oricon charts. Sure, it was on the charts for over a year, but it still never cracked the top 4. In 1997, The End of Evangelion OST hit #3, and that's possibly the most popular anime series of all time.
Now I hope you'll understand why the #3 spot on the charts is so thrilling. Well get this. The Macross Frontier OST has hit the #3 spot three times. First simultaneously with the opening theme “Triangular” sung by Maaya Sakamoto, and the ending theme “Diamond Crevasse” sung by May'n. Now the full soundtrack, Macross Frontier Original Soundtrack - Nyan Furo, released June 4th and written by the consistently awesome Yoko Kanno, has also hit #3.
Most of you will probably remember Kanno best from the Cowboy Bebop and/or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex soundtracks. While I firmly believe that either of those are far superior to anything on Frontier, one must give credit where it's due. The Frontier soundtrack is chock full of J-pop gems, including those previously mentioned as well as the two excellent versions of “What 'bout My Star?” Then there are the strong echoes of various Star Wars themes layered into the fully orchestrated pieces, most notably “The Target” and its follow up “Bajura.” While much of Kanno's more playful and experimental leanings are greatly subdued throughout the soundtrack, one can still find her signature sound from time to time, like the sweetly beautiful “Aimo ~ Tori no Hito.”
While it may not be quite as coherent as a stand alone album as the other soundtracks mentioned, Macross Frontier Original Soundtrack - Nyan Furo certainly delivers the goods. The anime watching and music listening public would seem to agree, propelling it into the history books.
