I'm going to have to watch some more Nanoha in order to find out why fans love Fate so damned much. A five-frame filmstrip of Fate Testarosa- cut from the test reel and given out at theaters as a special reward for seeing the film multiple times- is getting close to 250,000 yen on Yahoo! Japan, and this is hot on the heels of that disturbing tattoo incident. Fate couldn't be hotter with the hardcore Otaku if you slathered her in pancake batter and...oh. I just remembered that all the characters in Nanoha are third graders; I think I'd better lay off the kinky hypothetical situations. For now.
Now, it's true that a similar filmstrip of Rei Ayanami once sold for over 150,000 yen, but that's actually a little easier for me to wrap my brain around. Rei Ayanami was/is a cultural icon; owning a rare piece of Rei merchandise might very well impress people who otherwise have no interest in anime. I mean, spending that amount of money on something like this still strikes me as crazy, but I can at least see a kind of vague logic there. But a character from a flavor-of-the month show like Nanoha? Just WHY?
Okay, so I'm going to go back and actually finish the first season of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, and Fate better knock my socks off with awesomeness. Otherwise, I will be forced to conclude that a certain percentage of Nanoha fans simply cannot be trusted with currency.
